Solo morning in Old Fort at Mountain Gateway Museum It was a solo trip down to Old Fort, NC to check out Mountain Gateway Museum. The museum has a couple of exhibits called, "A Thousand Words: Photographs by Vietnam Veterans" and "Inspiration in the Mountain: Writers & Western North Carolina" that I wanted to see. The exhibits were good. The staff was very kind and helpful. While not the biggest museum, it was full of charm and style that only be founds in the mountains of western NC. Just like the quaint little town of Old Fort, NC where the museum is located. The museum has a history of its own. It should be visited.

If you're in Old Fort be sure to stop by Old Fort's Mountain Gateway Museum. Not far off of Interstate 40 and free of charge (donations accepted gladly) plus you get to learn about the town's Appalachian history and its early settlers. Be sure to tour the log cabins on site along with a beautiful creek behind museum. Kiesa is a very gracious and friendly museum host, who shared her knowledge about the area's history with me. Highly recommend stopping on your journey to Asheville and its surrounding areas.

There was a time pre-Revolutionary War when Old Fort was a very dangerous place for early pioneers. To pass the Mountain Gate meant a certain death from the elements, Indians, bushwhackers, or even possibly Sasquatch! Old Fort dates back to the very beginning of American history and if you LOVE Americana, O.F is a MUST SEE!

Part of the NC Museum network it has a real log home inside to show you how small homes were years ago. Also you can find a real still (of course not working) setup and a lot of local history. Part of their train exhibit is over in the old train station so make sure to go there too just a block away. The setting along the creek with two real log cabins...
