I had to work in Marion, so of course, I had to make a stop at The Davis Country Store & Cafe!
I already had a breakfast biscuit sandwich at The Davis Cafe, so this time I had to try their Reuben. I asked Amy, the owner, if they had wi-fi and I sat down in front of the fireplace (it used to be a house) and worked while I waited for my sandwich. Motown music was playing in the background. i got emotional listening to the music because my mom would always be playing "golden oldies," on the radio and gave me the love for all types of music.
I have had corned beef at the legendary Carnegie Deili in New York City and guess what, it was dry. They make their own corned beef at The Davis Cafe, and it shows. it was so juicy that I was licking my fingers. Some little girl was sitting, facing me, watching her show on her tiny tablet. I don't know if I scarred her for life watching a grown man licking his fingers. I used to hate saurkraut and I ate it all up with the cheese and thousand island dressing. The rye bread was perfect.
Why are Reuben sandwiches so popular in WNC? I never heard about a Reuben sandwich until I was 17 years old. I started working at a Philly sub shop in Miami with a bunch of my friends from high school. The place was a sh_tshowI of teenage boys. One of my friends, Reuben, worked with me. The first week I was there, I asked my Jewish boss from Philly, "Why the F does Reuben have a sandwich named after him?!" They mocked me for awhile after that.
I got a slice of the pound cake because I was chastised by so many of you for not trying it last time. You were all right! That pound cake is going to add pounds to his body. Amy gave me a blueberry biscuit to go, because she knows how I feel about biscuits and she's an enabler.
After walking out, I said goodbye to the ducks as an older couple was outside eating. They likely thought I was crazy but those ducks are my friends. Next time, I might hit up the croissant double patty smashburger they...

Livermush biscuits. That’s all you need to know! Just kidding, this is a great little cafe that treats regulars as family. Prices are good but the food is better!

I finally made it down to Old Fort to try The Davis Country Store & Cafe. I got their Reuben on Rye that they are known for. I was originally drawn to them because of the Livermush Biscuit I saw on facebook. Unfortunately I arrived well after breakfast was being served. They have a nice variety of sandwiches, but when the young man mentioned that their corned beef was house made I absolutely had to try it! The order was counter service but I still left a tip because I want to support this business and employees. I grabbed my drink and a seat and looked around the dining room at all the unique items they have on display. There are multiple farms, soapers, quilters, candle makers, ect, a doorway leading out of the dining room was the country store. I visited it before I left. While I waited on my Reuben Amy, the owner came out and chatted with me about biscuits and livermush and pastries and such. In no time I had a steamy warm meaty Rueben in my hands. That thing was thick! The corned beef was shaved at the perfect thickness and just the right amount of sauerkraut and sauce. I ate half and saved the rest for eating right before my shift. I checked out the country store. There was so much locally made stuff that I ended up leaving with a few items. To my surprise I found some very friendly bunnies and ducks! I left with some whipped tallow that smells amazing and a jar of pickled okra because you can never have enough pickled okra. I just wanted to give these guys a shout out. If you’re ever down in Old Fort and find yourself hungry I...
Read moreThe Davis Country Store is without a doubt my most favorite place to eat in McDowell county.. The food is absolutely delicious and the environment to enjoy your food after you’ve ordered it is like no other.. I mean whether you want to walk around the country store side checking out all the Neat things , or maybe just go out on the porch and talk to the Ducks like I do most the time, either way you can’t go wrong while you are waiting on your food which is gonna be delicious no matter what you have ordered. My personal favorites are Sausage Biscuit or Biscuits & Gravy for breakfast, and for lunch it’s a Reuben (done the Smoky Mtn Metal Worx way😜) but I also really enjoy the Big House done on a croissant with Turkey- AMAZING!!!! And I know after this long review yall are thinking - this guy has to be a friend of theirs to write this long review - well ya, of course I am- The Davis store makes everybody family...
