5 mile loop, just off of Lagrange Road. Smooth paved trail, used by walkers/joggers/runners, bicycles, strollers, young people, older folks, families, groups, and dog walkers.
Fair amount of wild life, deer, birds, rabbits, non poisonous snakes, etc.
Trees, plains, water, not a ton of shade.
Fair amount of elevation changes, nothing extreme.
Great place to go and get outside, it can get busy, but I've never thought it was "Crowded" anytime I've been there.
It takes me roughly 90 minutes to walk the loop.
There are paths to go through the middle of the grassland that isn't paved. I've only been thru a few times. Sounds like ticks are an issue. I've never had issues with ticks walking the loop.
I consider it a peaceful place to walk, run, or bike. I wouldn't consider it "Tranquil". It is directly adjacent to major roads. You do hear traffic while walking.
The parking isn't huge and can get muddy. I typically park across the Street at CVS and walk cross Lagrange. There is a formal entrance at the stoplight/crosswalk.
I wouldn't travel a long distance to use it, it's not a destination. It's great if you are local. The only complaint, sometimes I feel that pet walkers don't do the best job of...
Read moreI’m from out of town and wanted to go on a hike. This place was the closest. I actually first went to the Orland forest preserve and found no where park. Not sure why there isn’t better signage. I finally found this parking lot to the Orland grassland. Took off and hiked the 5 miles. I had planned to take the short cut however, after inspecting the tall grasses, it was tick city and the path is not cleared out. I got back to my car at 845 and I had a flipping FIFTY DOLLAR citation for being there after sunset. WHAT!!? I didn’t see sign stating fines are enforced. Also I had NO idea I would be back that late because of the tick covered trail that would of cut the time in half. It’s gorgeous there. But everywhere you are in there you hear traffic. Which blows. Save your time and don’t come to this crappy town and if you live here, sorry for ya. Seems like a awful...
Read moreORLAND GRASSLANDS is beautiful with a flatland prairie feel. There is a paved path that wraps around the grassland for walking, biking, rollerblading or running. Not to be confused with a forest preserve with large trees but rather stalky grasses, wildflowers and rolling terrain. This, I believe is a (5 mile) distance start to finish. There is not much shading along route so protective eyewear & hat is necessary, plenty of hydration & sunscreen. The grassland is a different type of beauty. You may see different types of birds and other inhabitants during your journey. There is no admission fee for visiting...
