Lake Powell is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. To say it in few words, it's is like boating in the Grand Canyon. The farther upstream from the resort you go, the more beautiful / awesome it gets. We opted for a package from the resort that included a 19' boat. Two nights plus boat, just over 600.00 in October. As with any boat rental figure another 500 deposit that you get back if the prop isn't damaged, which if you stay in the middle and watch out for shoals, won't be a problem. Fish along the edges, you're bound to damage a $150 prop. Not an issue for us. Also we had a 17.00 insurance waiver which I recommend for any serious boating issues over 500. Figure nearly 100 in fuel for one day if you travel 50 miles up and 50 miles back. That is about it for the budget details with the boat attachment to our hotel.
The hotel is huge, several two story buildings, the rooms were medium to good, not great, our bathroom was very clean and looked good, but the room appeared a little worn, mostly the carpet and furniture could use an over haul. But the experience with the lake makes you forget all about it. The scenery out our window was facing the marina and looking east affording an awesome sunrise view. The resort has several restaurants, breakfast buffet at our visit was 15 and included made to order omelettes. There are two outdoor pools, one with a hot tub (jets were broken though). Lobby Internet was slow, but good for text related Web sites and typical news sites, not good for videos or picture uploading. Some rooms also have wifi including ours. I am hearing not all rooms have it, you might check with the hotel if you need it in your rooms. Verizon has good Internet Service for Hot Spots and Phones, The other big three didn't pick it up any where around Page. Sprint had phone roam only, the same with ATT and T Mobile.
The 19 foot boat we used had a 150 hp Mercury outboard and the attendant told us it had a 65 gallon tank. For a lake that is 250 miles long 65 gallons is enough to get about 60 miles round trip based on canyon winds and chop. If you make it a straight shot and trim to shift the engine, we went 50 miles up to rainbow canyon and back and burned only 20 gallons, or about 84 dollars in fuel at marina prices. It was worth it, the view, rock formations, was beyond imagination if you haven't been there before. The resort also offers houseboat rentals, and many attach a 19 foot boat along as well for more flexibility. There are other marinas on the lake for fuel as well as floating bathrooms. There is also a bathroom at Rainbow Bridge which is a target stop for many boaters.
Overall if you visit, plan a boat tour, or rental, sight see Antelope, and the lake, and enjoy. Up here in the Page area, it feels like a million miles...
Read moreThis isnt a review on the lake but the people running the wahweap marina. We have rented a slip for our boat the last couple years and each time it’s a nightmare. Each time we have gone, we pay for a slip and everytime, people are parked in our slip. We come in after 5pm from our day on the lake and there is no one working to help us get our slip back. This year, we tried to come in a day early and get a slip the day before but they told us all slip were taken. We were told by 12pm our slip would be opened on the H dock.We stopped our fun to come in and make sure our slip was open. And once again, someone was in our slip. My father was upset and went in and let the people of the marina know our frustration. He then apologized for his acting out and people came out to move the jet skis that were in our spot. In that moment we were fine. Then, when they did move the jet skis, Darlene Hart, who worked for the marina, came out to our slip and then said to us “I hope you took care of them.” Meaning she wanted us to tip them. Which then upset us even more. Why would we tip someone, when we paid for a slip, and someone else is in our spot? She then said we ruined her employees lunch break making him come move the jet skis for us. Now my father wanted to talk to her further and explain to her that we shouldn’t need to tip people for doing there job when we paid for a spot. they are not doing there job, monitoring slips, and making sure our spot is open for us. Next thing you know, they had 4 men surrounding my father, threatening him they will call the cops and cuff him up. On top of all of this. They give you a tag to put in your slip. They put us on H dock. Which if you read the signs, is a courtesy dock. Meaning anyone can park there during the day. Except the people who reserved it at night. When we paid we were told it would be our slip for the 3 days. Why did they put paying customers in the courtesy dock? And remember when they said all docks were taken and we couldn’t come the night before to drop off our boat? All the slips at the H have tags on them that are getting sun bleached and have dates of 2 weeks prior! When we parked that evening, there were 10 open spots! Anyway, all things said and done. They charge you for a slip, but are not monitoring it at all. If someone is in your spot, they will come at you and tell you to tip the workers for the inconvenience. They also make you sign a contract and don’t give you a copy for...
Read moreI really tried to love the place. The location is amazing - absolutely gorgeous view of Lake Powell (sunrise is amazing, so plan accordingly) and so could be this resort. Yet there are too many things that are wrong to consider it an isolated issue.
Starting with the state of the rooms - a renovation is way overdue. I am not the one who would insist on only top-notch brand new sparkling conditions of lodging - I am happy when the room is comfortable and well kept. Which our room wasn't. Everything is old and feels somewhat neglected and it shows in so many details: one of the vanity mirror light bulbs being long dead, broken bathroom doorknob, bronze finish of the appliances half-gone - I could go on and on...
Of the amenities, two most notably lacking are elevators and Wi-Fi. If you are on the 2nd floor, prepare to lug your suitcases up the stairs. As for Wi-Fi, they've got it but it is beyond bad - it is totally unusable. The fact that mobile reception was practically nonexistent for my provider in the area didn't help either, leaving us without any connection to the outside). To add insult to injury, their internal systems are using the same Wi-Fi, so it was kind of funny to see the restaurant hostess repeatedly trying to connect her iPad to Wi-Fi in order to pull up the seat map and repeatedly failing to do so.
Of the restaurants, there are two, but they operate off the same menu. The lounge is availability-based and is taking no reservations, whereas the Rainbow Room is reservation-based. It was impossible to reserve a spot on the same day but we were able to make a reservation one day in advance. The funny thing is that the restaurant was mostly empty over the time we were there, with only some tables taken. At the same time, it took a lo-o-o-ong time to get our food (from seating to entree it took 1 hr 50 min, despite the fact we didn't waste time making our selection).
To put the cherry on a cake we were woken up next morning by the "room service" at 7:55am (it was our last day, so maybe it was a "gentle" nudge to get us to check out faster).
To summarize, as much as I liked Lake Powell, I am far from pleased with my experience at the resort. I don't foresee visiting Page again in the near future but I have to, I would definitely look at alternatives. (I also hope, the Resort Management is reading this and will use it as a recipe to...
