My Family’s Experience at the Petaluma Pumpkin Patch
My family and I visited the Petaluma Pumpkin Patch yesterday to celebrate my niece’s first birthday. What was supposed to be a joyful family outing turned into an extremely disappointing and hurtful experience.
As former NAACP Executive Board members of Branch 1081, and with my husband serving as both a city commissioner and a member of the Chief’s Advisory Board, we are deeply committed to community leadership, racial equity, and positive representation. We expected to spend the day enjoying time with our children not confronting racial insensitivity.
One of the staff members referred to my young daughter as a “monkey.” For context, we were the only African-American family there that day. Regardless of intent, that word carries a painful history tied to centuries of dehumanization toward Black people. It’s not simply a “nickname” or a “term of endearment.” It’s a reminder of oppression and racism that no parent should have to explain to their child in 2025.
To make matters worse, another employee acted as though we weren’t going to pay for our kids to jump on the inflatables, even though two of the five children were too young to participate. It felt like we were being unfairly singled out and profiled, rather than treated with respect and fairness like every other family.
This was supposed to be a fun family celebration, but it turned into a moment that left us disrespected and hurt. As community leaders and parents, we hope this business takes this as an opportunity to educate their staff on cultural sensitivity and the importance of understanding history not just from their perspective,...
Read moreThis is really a * 3.5 * rating. Petaluma Pumpkin Patch has a lot of FREE activities for the family. Admission is free, parking is free, visiting the animals is free, small corn maze is free, corn pit is free, hay pyramid is free as well as just walking the pumpkin patch enjoying the spirit of fall. The bouncy house is 8.00 per bouncer for unlimited time, which I think is a steal. The jumbo slide does not open until 4 pm, and I do not know the cost. There is also a big corn maze, that I did not see the price for, as well as pony rides (were not open when we went) The reason this is not a 5.0 rating is because … THIS PATCH IS * NOOOOT* STROLLER FRIENDLY AT ALL. If you are going to visit with littles, you best have several people that can PUSH and PULL the stroller or wagon. It was a nightmare getting our kids around due to the gravel/ dirt that is ground cover. If they could fix that, this patch would be perfect. There are food vendors, picture spots and shaded spots to sit. The staff is wonderful and when our little guy can walk better, we...
Read moreI had a great time with my kids and husband. My kids enjoy doing anytbing outdoors with us but the things are way over prized. The staff there in the food truck were nice but the lady from the corn maze paying center was very snobby, rude and ridicoules. There weren't too many people and i didn't understand the set up there since it was the first time for us to go in that location. So the way she directed to me was very annoying and disrespectful so i quickly shut her mouth and told her that she was snobby/ rude and told her that the first main thibg she needed in a job like that was to be able to give a good costumer service, After that she "apologized". The "paying center" for the corn maze its so misleading, it says "pay jumping" or a similar thibg like that. Next year we would go to the same place we have gone before. I am sure she regreted her way of directing to me. There were two ladies. The one i am talking about was and old lady the skinnier one with a pony tail. Hopefully the owner knows. I am sure she wasn't just rude to me for...
