We finally made time to visit this cool landmark. The google map wasn't the best to find it and the trail to find the chained rock is sort of confusing. We first took pictures of the overlook which was cool. Once we figured out which way to "hike", then we enjoyed nature's beauty. The hike is only .5 miles from the parking lot. The trail goes down which was confusing. The trail has somewhat of a rock base. There were plenty of tree roots to step over. The are a couple of places where you will need to maneuver over rocks. There are also plenty of steps that descend with handrails. Once you have reached the chained rock, only the best balancers should climb the boulder. It is definitely not for the fainted heart. I highly recommend viewing in October as the fall foilage...
Read moreBeautiful hike, listed as “moderate” and the beginning 2/3 of it was fairly easy, but the last 1/3 had LOTS of stairs, very uneven surfaces, and lots of places to trip. The last 50 yards to the rock outcropping is walking along a stone ledge, to the left is a 40* slab of rocks, to the right is a 60* drop- footing is fairly easy on the ledge though- unless you have balance issues. The rock outcropping where the chain is bolted to the rock is absolutely beautiful, but not easy to get to. Slab of rock about 60* had to get on all 4s to get up- and down. Breathtaking views...

From the Kentucky Tourism site- “the town's children had for years been told that the rock hanging ominously above town could not give way and come tumbling down on them as they slept because it had been 'chained'.”
The trail to the rock has many stairs, and towards the end the footing could be difficult for the elderly and those with balance issues. If you can make it to the rock there are gorgeous views...
