I grew up on Salisbury street and played in this park on a daily basis. Today I got the chance to walk there and personally I was appalled. Most of those trails where there when I was kid just not as obvious as they are now. It is so overgrown with trees yet more are being planted. The asphalt paths are in need of repaired, definitely not coded for the handicap or elderly. The play ground is gone except for a larger baseball frild.Guess parents have to hike their children up to the fort. City homeowners are paying a park tax. I think its time the city does their part like they have everywhere else. I hope the residents in the community start to hold the city accountable to do their part. Im sure those who read my post wont know how that park use to be. We sled rode down 1 part that we called ski jump..its gone a pile of dirt has been pushed there and nothing but trees, weeds and shrubs..the hill that leads to the circle we called dieon because it was steep..the path that use to be behind the ball field..gone..the playground with concrete slide shaped like a horseshoe that we would go down on wax paper to make it fast...gone. The asfalt was taken care of..the grass through out was cut and lots of grass for kids to play..not no more. You put in trails so you can get ran over by bicycles just like Riverfront. Oh yeah we can maintain that park but this one lets...
Read moreThis is a gem in Southside! There's probably a total of 1.5 miles of trails, but I hardly see a soul when I walk the park. It's a nice break from the city and there's a special little waterfall for you to find. Nothing like Schenley or Frick Parks, but for what it is, the trails are well kept, and sometimes you can even see the goats doing habitat restoration! It's obviously the Friends of South Side Park take their volunteer roles seriously, as the park is clean of garbage and the downed trees get moved quickly. Great spot for a stroll if you live close. They are putting in a pump...
Read moreThis park is AWESOME! Very quite every time I go. Features a nice walking path through the woods and such a nice escape right in the heart of south side. Good place to go with a friend and be able to have privacy to have some good conversation, OR go and have recreation on the bike path, or field... Cool Playground for kids, and clean water at the fountain for drinking. Only thing could have some restroom facility of some sort, I haven't seen one in my many trips there, either go before / hold it/ or chance a Port-o-let...
