Read moreVisited Starbase today. Can I just say, WOW!
Do not expect to go to a souvenir shop, there isn’t one. Don’t expect any food stores, or restaurants, there aren’t any. Don’t expect to get too close, you cannot gain direct access. What you can do, however, is park on the side of any road, walk out on the sand flat, drive within 150 feet of tower B and get great pictures of lots of stuff, including the Starhopper.
Spent about 1 and a half hours around the base. Be aware that the road towards the Boca Chica beach/state park is all under construction, so be very careful around all the construction workers please!
Know also that if you get a room on South Padre Island, even though as the crow flies, Starbase is only 8 miles away, you will drive an hour in-land to get there. Do not let that deter you. It is so worth it.
We had come down to watch flight 9 go, but it got postponed. We did not get refundable tickets, rooms, or car, so we came anyway. It was awesome! Check out all the pictures. They do not do justice to the sheer awe that we felt being around that base.
The only picture that I did not get was Elon’s jet over at Brownsville airport. I did not realize what I was seeing until it was too late, but enjoy and comment on any of these pictures.
When you look at the towers, we had no idea how tall they really are. Each floor that you see is actually two stories, and there are twenty eight sections at about 18 feet each section, so if my calculations are close, it makes roughly 460 to 475 feet high. If you look closely at the full picture of tower b, you will see a worker on the bottom platform, and if he/she is say, 6 feet tall, then from the ground to the top of that first section is about 30 feet. Each section and a half above that section should be about 30 feet, so anyway, there you go.
Starship is 171 feet tall, btw, about 52 meters. Anyway you look at this, it is a big a.. ship. Amazing that it can even get off the ground.
Looking at the new water deluge system was extraordinary as well. Way to go architects and engineers who designed all of it. And the new flame trench is just crazy huge.
As for the chop sticks, you will see that we are only about 150 feet away from tower B, and they were right near the bottom of the tower today.
Sorry this was so lengthy, but I really hope you enjoy my little post today. Go...
Read moreNestled along the expansive shores of Boca Chica Beach, Starbase emerges as a gem of space innovation. While it may appear to be merely a factory devoid of typical tourist amenities, for space enthusiasts like myself, it is nothing short of a pilgrimage site: a celestial Mecca.
Here, SpaceX’s vision takes tangible form. Starship, the fully reusable launch system, is being meticulously crafted within these unassuming walls. Elon Musk’s audacious ideas, once confined to blueprints, now echo through the steel and concrete of this coastal haven.
As I stepped onto the sun-baked tarmac, the salty breeze carried whispers of ambition. The towering Ship prototypes stood like sentinels, their stainless-steel skins reflecting the relentless Texas sun. Each weld, each rivet, spoke of humanity’s yearning to transcend gravityto reach for the stars. I traced my fingers along the rough surface, feeling the weight of centuries of scientific inquiry and human dreams.
And history it is. Starbase is where the improbable becomes probable. It’s where the mundane nuts, bolts, and girders, transforms into the extraordinary. The launch pad, a stark expanse of concrete, awaits its moment of glory. Soon, Starship will rise from this very spot, defying gravity, leaving Earth’s embrace behind. The countdown will echo across the marshlands, and humanity will hold its breath.
Will Musk’s vision prevail? Will Starship ferry us to Mars, to distant moons, to the cosmic unknown? The skeptics raise their eyebrows, citing past failures and budget overruns. Yet, here we stand, pilgrims at the altar of possibility, fueled by hope and curiosity.
And so, my fellow travelers, if you find yourself on these sun-drenched shores, remember: Starbase is more than a factory, it’s a testament to human tenacity.
A last advice: if you are not an US citizen, bring your passports, for the Border Security will scrutinize...
