I have many deer that come to my property regular to eat fruit off my fruit trees, forage, and get clean water from my stream. They've made a home here, especially 3 in particular, a mother and her two babies that come multiple times a day and never leave my property. One day, one of the babies shows up with a large, thick piece of plastic around it's foot, causing it to limp and severely hindering it's mobility. As we were getting into colder weather I became very worried for her ability to get around, and I started seeing her a lot less often as well. I called everyone I could think of in my area for help and kept getting recommended the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. I emailed, and waited on a response so hopeful that I would finally be able to get this suffering deer some help that I couldn't provide myself.
However, the response I received was cold, callous, and exactly the opposite of what I would expect from an agency put in place that is supposedly looking out for wildlife. I was advised to shoot the deer. Their solution to a little piece of plastic around her leg was to just kill her. The follow up advice? If I didn't feel safe discharging a firearm, call my local sheriff's department so they could come shoot her. No empathy, no help in finding an actual solution, just multiple options given to me for outright killing her as if her life is so disposable because she's an animal.
It was a brief, heartless response in the first few lines of the email, while the majority of the email was chastising me and subtly threatening legal action for feeding the deer. I was so helpfully reminded that putting food to encourage the gathering of deer is only legal if I want to hunt them during bow season. They wanted to make sure I knew I can only look out for these deer if my intent is to kill them. So to summarize, the NC Wildlife Resources Commission is only interested in helping you end the lives of these animals, and not much else. I'm deeply saddened by the response from them and won't be going to them for help in the future, I've...
Read moreI had to renew my vessel registration via phone, perhaps because I let it lapse, and the whole process only took 8 minutes (about 2 min to navigate menus, 2 min hold, and 4 min talking with a very effective and personable service professional to confirm my information, enter payment, and provide a temporary reference number). When I first registered my vessel in 1995, I believe the cost for 3 years was $91, and now it's only $98, so relative to inflation it's dropped by about half. I'm happy to help support the organization's ongoing efforts and very happy that they've been able to keep...
Read moreThe website is all but useless, Ive been on hold for over an hour now just to ask how to print tags for a lifetime lic. holder. I can find three different ways to buy the lic. but not a single one that helps me print the tags that I need to use the most expensive lic. sold in the state. I bet you can find time to write me a ticket if you catch me without the tags that you have hidden so well. Thanks for all the frustration and wasted time. Its nearly impossible to be a law abiding...
