"The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys." True, but Good Men share their toys. In this case, they actually pay you to play with them. Because the tiny amount you'll spend for a ticket doesn't begin to cover the carrying cost, let alone total cost of ownership, of these amazing aircraft. And if you're not into planes (???who isn't???) at least go upstairs to the museum of war artifacts. They have Japanese-issued cash from all occupied territories. They have every hat ever worn by a Soviet soldier. They have uniforms and uniforms and uniforms. Medals and rations and soap bars and knives and gas masks and flags and survival kits and...you won't believe all that's being displayed in Rexburg. The staff there are super friendly. They'll stop their work repairing a plane to answer any question. And, back to the planes--they actually fly. (I know because I watch them everyday from my home office.) These incredibly expensive machines entertain the city at the summertime Rexburg Air Show. And throughout the year if you're lucky enough to see them come and go. The Legacy Flight Museum is open Monday to Saturday between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and then on Saturdays for the remainder of the year.
Inside you’ll be met by a Grumman S-2 Tracker, a P-63 Kingcobra, a Boeing Stearman and a Beechcraft Staggerwing, to name a few.
A real highlight is a P-51 Mustang flown by the local ace Roland R. Wright (1919-2015). Wright was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which led to the aircraft being dubbed a “Mormon Mustang”.
Another conversation piece is Ole Yeller, a P-51D Mustang that previously belonged to another WWII pilot Bob Hoover (1922-2016).
Auto fanatics will admire the museum’s Ford Mustang, Corvette Stingray and small fleet of military vehicles, and on the upper level are displays of uniforms, equipment,...
Read moreWhat an incredible find in Rexburg! The sheer amount of historical exhibits and their presentation is very well done in this facility. The staff and volunteers were friendly, informative, and knowledgeable. The kind gentleman with the red pickup truck was informative with an infectious level of enthusiasm for military aviation history that all generations should be exposed to. If you want to see cutaway displays of radial aviation motors, there are several incredible examples here, some have electric motors attached to demonstrate how the internals move during operation. There is an Allison v12 tucked away in the corner as well. 4 separate jeeps in different configurations and an impressive small arms collection (for Idaho, that says something) are...
