I was there for archaeology awareness month in September. We were doing field work just past the visitor center towards the pavillion, on the bank by the river.
While working, we discovered a midden of shells, stone flakes from processing, and pottery. The time period was from Archaic (about 2,000-4,000 years ago) and Woodland Period (about 800-1,200 years ago). It's a great feeling when you get to explore the past of a small settlement with archaeologists. And even better when you find artifacts and learn about their relevance.

Read moreMy kids loved listening to the actors who portrayed several different characters from the era during the gathering. This festival seemed really small. We went there on Sunday. I think if we would have gone on Saturday there would have been more actors and vendors there. Those who were there were extremely friendly. This is a great fund raiser for the forest preserce.
