It is a great short drive from the residential areas to the parking lot here. Then it is a great short hike to the top. In short, this is a noncommittal endeavor. I find I usually have to drive 30 minutes into the mountains for a similar nature trail with a view.
The Lookout Trail is a loop that I usually start from Parking Lot #4 and end at the Villa Montalvo Art Center. You can see the city and the villa for a large section of the trail which gives one a sense of security if you are bad with directions like me.
