Discovery Park is our go to hiking destination when we cannot get away from the city to see other beautiful WA trail destinations. There are countless breathtaking views found throughout the majestic 534 acre park. It's also pet friendly (leash laws are required). A great tranquil escape within a big city yet feels like a world away.
The terrain varies so if you're seeking adventure and exercise the park does not disappoint. From the prairie-like fields and sand dunes at the southern end to meadowlands within the interior of the park. Keep your eyes open to spy some eastern cottontail rabbits, barred owls, deer or even eagles as well as many other rare wildlife such as the mountain beaver. The mossy laced forested areas feel peacefully magical and incredibly vast. It's also a wildflower delight during the summer bloom. At the western edge, Puget Sound tidal beaches are a beach-combers delight that's also host West Point Lighthouse. The western bluff offers a magnificent view of both the Cascade and the Olympic Mountain ranges. On a sunny clear day majestic Mount Rainier dominates the skyline to the south. The park also has tennis and basketball courts, a children's play area nearby the visitors centre. Plenty of historic building structures remain from the storied Fort Lawton era. Some of these have been remodeled and are now private residences so do please respect the privacy of the residents.
Parking is ample in the north, south and Visitor Centre parking lots (outside of the pandemic). Vehicle theft however is quite a serious concern so do take caution to secure your valuables to ensure they're not visible. There have been ongoing reports of unleashed dogs over the years so exercise caution.
ALERT: Summer season, please be sure your pet is protected against ticks. Dog owners have reported they've found ticks in the...

You already know how astonishing are the views, how deep is the forest, and how unusual the history. You already know that there's sand and rock, high pines and shrouded cedar groves. You can probably tell me about your favorite blackberry patch, the place along the water where you saw the harbor seals playing that one time, and how you danced around the lighthouse with that special someone and realized you were in love.
But if you haven't been, let me urge you to read the signage that gives you a window onto the military history of the place. Allow me to invite you to seek out the wild roses, to listen to the birds, to hear the waves of the Sound lap against the beach. In autumn, you'll find berries along the way--don't eat any you're not sure of, no matter how enticing! In summer the broad leaf maples and ferns will glow emerald, and take your breath away.
And in spring, as I write this, there be an elixir of passionate growth on the breeze, speaking loudly in flowers, enticing bumbles and butters. You might sit on the great lawn and watch the kite-flyers dream of greater heights, the dog-humans love their furbabies.
Or you might be there with someone special (human or not), someone you've just met, or someone you've known for decades, sitting together on green and gazing at the Olympics now topped with snow, splendid and astonishing, and realize that the person at your side is just as splendid and astonishing.
It might be a good time to tell them that. Even if it is your dog. No one will judge you for that. Not at...
