Ok, I have read many many posts about this hike up to Cathedral Rock. I'm gonna give you all the information you need in this one post.
see part one, 1-3 by googling, Cathedral Rock. Google limits words
4th: This is not an easy hike for anyone who is timid about heights and a little bit of rock climbing on your stomach. This can be dangerous if your not paying attention, and focused on what you doing as you climb up the 45degree vertical portions of this hike which are located about the midway point on the hike. You have to be somewhat in decent shape. It only takes a few minutes to make it up the vertical portion. However, if it's crowded, you may have to wait for people coming up or people coming down because there's only space for one person at a time once you get into that section. After you reach the plateau, the most difficult part of the hike is over. From the plateau up to the summit is pretty much just a gradual climb and not dangerous but it is an elevation climb. I have not done very much hiking in my life. I am a 65 year old Army Retired Veteran in good shape for my age. If you are a casual hiker or experienced hiker and comfortable with elevation, this hike after you complete the climbing part is pretty much what your probably used to in the past. I did see young children and folks with dogs. I personally would not recommend it unless you've already have experience with that.
5th: Stay on the trail if possible. National Park Service have placed the rock stanchions in wire and little white mark painted on the rocks, markers and some trail signs to guide you to keep you on the path of the trail. You will be excited on this hike to see a trail sign that says: End of Trail! YOU HAVE REACHED THE SUMMIT!!! Enjoy the views. White markers and trail Signs are a little bit harder to see on the way down, so pay attention. Try to stay on the trail which should be the safest way to get down.
6th: I want to be honest, looking up was very intimidating for me. I am not a big fan of heights even though I did jump out of a perfectly good airplane in the military. I thought the descent would be just as uncomfortable especially on the vertical portion, but I found that it was easier and more comfortable going down. That could be attributed to I was now familiar with the terrain. This was the 1st time I have been on Cathedral Rock.

Read moreI hesitate to even mention anything about this place because Sedona is already so crowded (stay away - turn back - nothing to see)!
It's an amazing community to visit and so much to see in this tiny town nestled between the rocks. It's breathtaking and all the terrain is so close that you can actually interact with it and enjoy it. For example - Cathedral Rock. It looks massive and yet as you drive closer you're able to really see how accessible it is. The trails are marked well and they have many to choose from. Some more difficult than others but certainly one for every skill level, even the casual walker so don't be intimated and give one of them a try. You won't regret it and the views and colors from the surrounding area are outstanding and unlike anything else I've experienced in this great country.
One thing to note about parking is that it fills up pretty quickly (there are two small lots) so if nothing is open just hang out for a few minutes and usually someone will come along and you'll be able to take theirs. Also, to park, you'll need to pay $5 at the machine in the first lot so don't skip that step and end up with a fine. Just place the ticket on the dash and you're good to explore. Take it with you so that if you go to another area and hike further or do any off-roading (amazing trails) you'll be covered there...
