My review shouldn't set the foundation for someone's overall decision. It's a perspective from my experience. Please understand all experiences are different while pondering potential schools.
SRU is an average party college. From day one, parties are advertised on social media, so make sure you balance school and fun if you're the party type... Their idea of a well rounded student is one that can remember volumes of information and names of vanity that'll surely burn you out. Plan on learning information that is completely useless to your major, yet it's a must to graduate. Note, orientation is a bit deceptive. No one says hi but people will say it back. Walking to class can be somewhat of an adventure for those furthest from campus. In the winter, be careful as the university's name suggests Slippery Drops: U n I Hurts A Knee. Most classes are melancholic in tone and promising of self distraction. Materials are the same as your book just in PowerPoint form with some additional dialogue resulting from student questions. Basically, you pay $xxxxx to take a test. So, if you're knowledgeable in an area take a "test out" option if you can but don't rely on the school to present that option. However, rarely, will you find some really fun and interesting teachers that draw you to their class day after day but short lived. However, the events (go to them they're the highlights of this school), and recreational aspect is worth it and then some. But that shouldn't be the reason you come or the parties. Dorms are very nice and comfortable, but lack privacy unless you have no roommate. Know what events take place from CAs on each floor; you may have to hunt them down! Peripheral services are top notch, helpful, and guiding. Advisors are sometimes over burdened and hardly responsive. but get to know them if office hours coincide with yours (mine didn't so there were major difficulties regarding which classes were optimal) that provide additional opportunities down the road. Make sure you research your major for not all career options are "accredited". That is most important!!
Regarding services for mental ills or struggling students, if they feel your issues are out of their expertise they won't help you in the slightest. Instead, you will be given a list of resources that can, so I hope you have a car and health insurance. Personal, all I needed was a councilor.
Overall, my personal experience, perspective, and opportunities weren't the best while attending SRU, but I learned a lot about others and myself. I also met amazing throughout the experience that have worked and cultivated who I am. Although my experience was more negative than good, many students would say the opposite... Make note, if you are a hands-on learner do NOT attended this institution. Or the institution will remind you of where you belong. I recognized this truth. And am sharing it with you. Hopefully, I wasn't too...
Read moreThis school is HORRIBLE. While I was not a student, I do live with someone who recently graduated from SRU and I have consistently heard of the issues this school has caused for them. First of all, the advisement for students is horrible. Each semester they would say that this particular student needed "other" or different credits which caused them to stay for an extra year taking these "necessary" classes. Not to mention, those extra classes ended up being electives rather than core classes. Another problem this person faced was with financial aid. As a student who is paying for college out of their own pocket, the student did not receive any help. This student submitted a loan application to pay off outstanding debt to the school itself so he/she could receive their diploma and the school denied that loan. After paying out of pocket for books, rent and other expenses, he/ she was denied by the financial aid office. When speaking with those in that office, specifically Jackie and Sandy, not only did they refuse to help any further they also personally denied this student of that loan. Not to mention, Jackie also hung up the phone on this person( sounds pretty professional right?). If you ask me, this is no way a staff at a college should be treating a student, let alone a person who graduated and is trying to pay off outstanding debt. This college does not seem to help people with furthering their education. They seem to be only trying to help themselves with making money. I will also note that the state of Pennsylvania is raising the rates on state school tuition and SRU is one of those schools complying to those rates.
Must I add, I am a graduate of University of Pittsburgh and I received more help from the advisors and financial aid office than this student has and PITT has triple the amount of students to look after.
In all, to all you prospective students and parents I DO NOT recommend this school to you. There are far better and less expensive state schools in Pennsylvania to choose...
Read morei'm a current student here at SRU and it's an excellent campus with super friendly staff and students. the claims of alcohol are as true as any other campus, and it's very hard to regulate, but i've been at the university for three semesters and have had no issues whatsoever. the campus is beautiful and the buildings are well maintained, and it's an overall excellent college. the only downside is that in order to do really anything, you must travel off campus and drive a ways out because it is in the middle of nowhere, but it is nothing new to me due to the fact that my hometown is very similar. it's an amazing school, and if you're looking to attend a supportive and beautiful school with good programs for any major, slippery rock is the perfect...
