But over time, the mask started to slip. I witnessed a troubling lack of integrity and accountability from those in leadership, the very people meant to be pillars of the community. Instead of leading with honesty and compassion, they created an environment where hypocrisy overshadowed the mission.
Volunteers — the lifeblood of any nonprofit — should feel valued and respected. Instead, I saw them used and discarded. And when anyone dared to speak up, instead of listening, leadership resorted to smear campaigns, lies, and attempts to tarnish reputations.
Habitat for Humanity should represent hope, service, and integrity. Unfortunately, my experience revealed something very different. My hope in leaving this review is that true accountability and change can take root — because the mission matters too much to be overshadowed by the behavior I witnessed.”** *“I have made countless attempts to address the damage caused when staff members discredited me and smeared my name and reputation through their inappropriate actions. I reached out to the director and head of HR multiple times, asking for a clear explanation and a formal apology. Rather than take responsibility or seek resolution, the leadership — people up there in age who openly claim to be Christians — chose to involve an attorney and issue me a no‑trespass order.
They would much rather make an innocent person the villain and keep themselves the victim. The level of deceit, betrayal, and avoidance I experienced is staggering. These individuals present themselves as pillars of the community, yet their actions reveal a deep hypocrisy and a willingness to hide the truth rather than confront it.

Read moreI do not know why the people at habitat have to be so difficult. They're either rude poor tempered or just completely impossible. My wife went in there and by mistake bought some electric light fixtures that the electrician who had volunteered said would work for our trailer but failed to inform her that they would pull a lot of power and wouldn't be that bright. It's quite obvious that they just wanted to make a sale. And since they have a strict no refund policy you're over a barrel if things don't work out. I have shopped at habitat for 20 years and as the reviews on their site state fair prices have become really ridiculous. There doesn't seem to be any regulation or oversight with this company and there really should be. They're parking is horrible! They're service is horrendous. Once in a great while you'll find somebody who's helpful and courteous and I tipped them in cash which I know they're not supposed to take and I'm not supposed to offer but I'm so overwhelmed with gratitude that I do it. The concept and the overall principle of what they're doing is fantastic but the people that they employ and the way that they handled themselves is absolutely disgusting. I even found myself almost getting in a fight physically with an employee because I did not understand that some brackets that were for sale went to a table set because of the way that they had it organized I did not understand that. And all I wanted to do was to buy the bracket and the employee told me that I wanted something for nothing which was not true I was willing to pay for the bracket as it was priced I just didn't want to buy the table top with it that was priced separately. I wish there was another alternative but they are the only game in town. When you go there take a tape measure with you do not expect anything you'll have to help yourself or get help. You cannot return anything you cannot get credit. You'll have to have very thick skin and just beware, when you go there.
Just left there just now and they try to double charge me for the same pendant light. I caught it and went back and had them redo the ticket and there was no apology. Read moreI know the proceeds of sales at the store go to a good charity, obviously… In my honest opinion, I think they would do better, and sell way more , if they priced like a thrift store. $200 for one piece of a sectional is INSANE! Who cares if it's Ashley when 75%+ of it is missing. I can't imagine how much it would be if Ashley ever donated a whole sofa. They used to have a great selection of spray paint for $2-2.50 a can. Not anymore. Just regular brush on paint that's priced as if you're at Lowe's. Like I said: it's for a good cause, but they could sell a lot more of the donations they get if merchandise wasn't priced as if it's perfect and brand new. People make the same suggestion on their Facebook page all the time, but they won't do anything about it. I must mention though--Springfield thrift shops and the people who price their merchandise all need to take a field trip --a shopping field trip--and get in touch with reality. When I go to a thrift shop and buy, let's say--a sweatshirt...I know it's gonna smell like someone's grandmas basement and I'll have to wash it before I wear it, maybe multiple times. So I expect to pay a couple of bucks for it, not what Martha paid for it when she bought it for Bill at the Sears and Roebuck, or Monkey Wards, or Crazy Cecil's or Otasco in 1973 with her s&h green stamps. Shoot. That sweatshirt might be GEN-U-WINE high quality polyester. $20...it's a rare...
