Wilson Park in Granite City has always been a local go-to place for my family. They’ve updated the playground equipment and swings. The park district made some swings and other play areas wheelchair accessible (which is nice for me when they’re available. It’s like a swinging plastic La-Z-Boy). Wilson Park is kept clean and there’s always staff nearby. Not to mention, on one end there is a small, luscious garden with a gazebo where many people have weddings and take photos for prom. I’m the garden, hidden away by the building that used to house the public pool, there’s a open 2 story house/castle type structure surrounded by a ditch that may have had water In it at some point (a moat) where my friends and I used to play Kings and Queens when we were children. If you aren’t comfortable with a crowd, there are several smaller play areas sprinkled through the park where you can play alone with your family. The park pool is a fun place as well. They offer swimming lessons for the kids. You can even rent the pool for parties (this may have changed since COVID). The ice skating rink is a multi-purpose space. Once a year, they host a building wide boom sale courtesy of the local library. It’s my favorite event! There are baseball diamonds, soccer fields, water fountains…something for everyone. I prefer to find thrifty, free things to do. For the grownups, there are tennis courts, basketball courts, an old plane from WWI or WWII (I apologize I haven’t viewed it in so long I forget what the plaque says). The sidewalk surrounding Wilson Park is about a mile long and perfect for daily walks. Don’t take my word for it. Go see...
Read moreI love the park so much, it's a really big park for all of the courts and different playgrounds that are there. They also have a ga ga ball pit which is super fun I recommend anyone try, it's near the pool. Essentially to play you need a bouncy dodgeball and a giant hexagonal pit. It is a battle royal, everyone goes in but one comes out a winner. The rules are that if you hit under someones hips with the ball then they are out. You can only hit it once, if it hits someone else or the walls then you can hit it again. Your not allowed to pick the ball up but you can catch it, if you catch it after it touches someone then they're out, if you catch it after you touch it then your out. The goal is kinda like dodgeball where you gotta hit the other person, you can go aggressive for the ball or you can try to survive it's really fun. Also if it goes out of the pit then whoever touched it last is out even if it touches a wall or something. You can also get back in if the ball flies out of bounds and you catch it while your out, you will switch places with whomever made the mistake. When it comes to the last 2 then you can hit the ball twice before you can't...
