Period time well done!

Fort Steuben was built in in Feb. 1787 by Major John Hamtramck and named for Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, a Prussian army officer who had served under General Washington. The original purpose was to provide protection from Indians for the first surveyors to venture into the Northwest Territory.

Each building has been carefully set as it would have been back in those times giving you a real feel of what it would have been like living within the fort. The kids loved walking through each building. Lots to see, learn and photograph!

The visitor’s center of Fort Steuben is also a very nice place. Lots of old artifacts in glass cabinets to view, a great gift shop, and since Dean Martin is from this area, a large section dedicated to him to see and items to purchase.

Outside, we had to walk over to the fountain in the park portion. Lots of water spouts, shooting water in different directions. It’s hard to keep the kids dry because they really like the feel of the spray especially on a hot day!

We visited this area during Christmas where the city tree goes up and many of the nutcrackers are near. Photo ops are plentiful and a little shopping village to buy wares.

A definite on any vacation...

Extremely disappointed. We stopped on our way home from a trip thinking it could be an educational pit stop for our kids. Staff was rude. When we walked in the woman at the desk asked what we were doing here. I told her we were checking things out because we had never been here. She rolled her eyes and said well there is admission fees. I said ok and she seemed bothered so we decided to go outside. There was a park area with an open gate and no signs stating it was closed. We were looking at the horse statue and the building when a man came over and said you have to go. He locked the gate as we walked through. Concerned we had come at closing time we double check and they were still open for 1 hour and 15mins... so I do not understand what the problem was. Needless to say we would not recommend choosing this as a...

12 nutcracker...... This year is awful. The chalets , carnival rides... Give me a break. The Nutcrackers along Market and 4th. The traffic is FAST and dangerous to all . The side walks broken and uneven. Toddlers are unable to complete entire walk. Let alone the elder generation cant handle. If going to have tooooo spread out, these are must. Need police walking around too, shut down 4th St. esp. on weekends, fix side walks. ALL store fronts decorated even if empty. All restaurants AND business open on weekends. Make it worth for families that can manage the walk. Shame on Stuebenville , Fort operators, and Nelson's for letting a good...

#Tour #Historic #Fort Steuben in Steubenville, Ohio is a fully reconstructed 18th-century fort on its #original site overlooking the #Ohio #River. It was first built in 1786 to protect #government surveyors during the early days of #America’s westward expansion. It delivers a vivid glimpse into #frontier #military #life. Walking through the wooden barracks and #blockhouse, I could almost hear the echo of #soldiers preparing for duty. There’s even an #archaeological dig site and a building displaying the finds. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in #American #history.

Definitely worth a stop. This is not the original fort it’s a rebuild but is on the same spot at as the original Fort. The folks working there are super nice. Gave us a deal to get in since we only had about 20 min before closing. The set up for each cabin was interesting but not as good as I had hoped. They are doing an archeological dig in the middle of the fort. It would be interesting to see all of the data on what they are finding. Worth a stop! Plenty of parking and restrooms on site.
