This tree is a giant, probably one of the biggest around. I have heard these American Sycamore's called buttonwood and plane tree's as well. The tree is near the road but there is a curb present now and a bike lane that make it impossible to park near the tree without blocking the bike lane and hanging into the road. It looked so different that I actually drove past it and had to turn around. It is possible to park down the road and walk along the sidewalk which is a short flat walk. It is worth the walk and bigger at the base than some Redwoods I saw in Eureka California a couple years ago. Lots of things to see and do along the way and in Sunderland and the surrounding towns including some beautiful views, traditional New England commons and hiking. Check out the potato festival the first weekend...

The magnificent Buttonball Tree!!! I was so delighted to come across this tree on a recent road trip. It’s gigantic, the only thing I can even compare it to is sequoia trees. I actually gasped getting out of the car to photograph it and stand in its splendor. It’s totally worth the trip to see this beauty. I’m so glad it has been protected for so long and still here for us to enjoy, living history! It’s plaque reads: 1787-1987 The National Arborist Association and the The International Society or Arboriculture jointly recognize this significant tree in this bicentennial year as having lived here at the time of the signing of our...

The Sunderland Buttonball tree (American Sycamore) near the center of Sunderland is the largest tree in Massachusetts, measured by circumference. It is a very short distance from easy parking in front of the town library, all on sidwalks. It has stood there since the days of the Pilgrims in Massachusetts. Enjoy a quiet moment with this ancient sentinel, then go find a local...
