A Hidden Gem of Central Oregon – Paulina Falls

Nestled in the heart of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, Paulina Falls is a breathtaking natural treasure that feels like it belongs in a storybook. The moment we arrived, we were welcomed by the soothing sound of cascading water echoing through the tall pines. It felt like stepping into another world—peaceful, refreshing, and awe-inspiring.

The short trail to the falls is perfect for all skill levels, and the views are absolutely worth every step. The trail splits to offer both upper and lower viewpoints, and I recommend seeing both if you can. The upper viewpoint provides a stunning panoramic view of the twin falls plunging into a rocky canyon, while the lower trail brings you right up close to the base of the waterfall, where you can feel the cool mist on your face. It’s a sensory experience you won’t forget.

We visited in the summer and found the area surprisingly uncrowded. There are benches to sit and take in the serenity, and the whole area is kept clean and well-maintained. It's the perfect place to pause, reflect, and just enjoy the power and beauty of nature.

Short hike from parking lot. I recommend hiking down to lower area.

Also - I recommend the Paulina Plunge. If you want a guided tour, there are several outfits offering. Personally, I suggest going on your own. Down the road, take the McKay camp ground exit and travel a couple miles on the dirt road. When you get to the camp ground, go across the bridge and park on the right. If it's later in the day, you will see several other cars parked. In fact, you may have to backtrack and park on the dirt road leading into the camp. Near the original location I mentioned to park, you will find a trail heading east about a hundred yards north of the Paulina River. Take the trail which follows the river for about 2.4 miles. The trailhead will says Paulina Lake 7 miles. Per the distance stated, you will find an area with natural water slides. If after 10 or 11am, you will know the right place as others will be there. We tried 2 of the natural...

A nice small waterfall that plunges eighty feet over the lowest point of the Newberry Caldera.

The trail from the parking lot takes you to the lower or upper viewing areas.

The lower trail is about a quarter of a mile and takes you down a path to some big rocks.

It is hard to a good view without a viewing platform and you have to climb on the rocks.

The river is full of big rocks that have fallen off the sides of the waterfall.

The upper trail leads you to a viewing platform with views down the waterfall.

A hiking trail will take you to the visitors center for about two miles.

The falls is one of many attractions that are a short distance from each other in the Newberry Caldera.

Located near La Pine off of Hwy 97 in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

A nice place to stop and see a waterfall...

Paulina Falls is a beautiful place to visit, with its impressive double waterfalls. The upper trail provides an easy, paved path for viewing the falls from above. You can also explore the lower trail to get a closer look at the cascading water. Both trails offer stunning perspectives and photo opportunities. It is a wonderful destination to enjoy the natural beauty. While the falls were impressive, it's always so disappointing to see that people disregard what it means to leave no trace despite there being trash cans at the trail head/parking lot. Not only that, but people completely ignore signs indicating areas of restoration and climb all over the land just to get their IG picture. Ugh!!
