A Hidden Gem of Central Oregon – Paulina Falls
Nestled in the heart of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, Paulina Falls is a breathtaking natural treasure that feels like it belongs in a storybook. The moment we arrived, we were welcomed by the soothing sound of cascading water echoing through the tall pines. It felt like stepping into another world—peaceful, refreshing, and awe-inspiring.
The short trail to the falls is perfect for all skill levels, and the views are absolutely worth every step. The trail splits to offer both upper and lower viewpoints, and I recommend seeing both if you can. The upper viewpoint provides a stunning panoramic view of the twin falls plunging into a rocky canyon, while the lower trail brings you right up close to the base of the waterfall, where you can feel the cool mist on your face. It’s a sensory experience you won’t forget.
We visited in the summer and found the area surprisingly uncrowded. There are benches to sit and take in the serenity, and the whole area is kept clean and well-maintained. It's the perfect place to pause, reflect, and just enjoy the power and beauty of nature.

If it's later in the day, you will see several other cars parked. In fact, you may have to backtrack and park on the dirt road leading into the camp. Near the original location I mentioned to park, you will find a trail heading east about a hundred yards north of the Paulina River. Take the trail which follows the river for about 2.4 miles. The trailhead will says Paulina Lake 7 miles. Per the distance stated, you will find an area with natural water slides. If after 10 or 11am, you will know the right place as others will be there. We tried 2 of the natural...
