Date of visit: Janurary. 02. 2025. Little museum- Big on strange history! I adored this place- We decided to start off our new year with meaningful monsters! The Flatwoods Monster has been one of my lifelong favorite cryptids so it was akin to a dream come true to finally visit this museum and town. Many might point out how small it is, and while it is a museum, it gave me the presentation quality and atmosphere of an older rural library and that added much to its charm. It kind of felt like a time capsule in a way. It's got several sealed cabinets that double as exhibits for documents and photographs as well as shelves lined with various Flatwoods Monster merch. There's even a sitting area complete with couch and chairs with a documentary playing. The museum wasn't crowded when we went at all (we were the only ones in at the time despite this place getting much foot traffic) so that made it more special. The folks that run the place are pleasant and genuine! I had a nice talk with them getting some extra insight and details regarding the monster sightings- as they have ties to the original family. There is also a cool giftshop and you can see a few of the things I got from there [The purple sided postcard at top was not for sale there but was picked up in point Pleasant. The pin, postcard, patch, brochure and poster are available to pick up at the Museum giftshop and came home with me!] Please stop and support this place- whether you love this cryptid like me or if it's your first time hearing about it. It was such neat, with a touch of personable, experience for me. I'd love to...
Read moreThe flatwoods monster reputation has attracted visitors from all over the world. The building was built in 1930, and originally was an apothecary and soda shop. The original hardwood floors remain as well as all the wonderful woodwork, cupboards, drawers and tile work. The ceilings are beautiful. The museum offers typical t-shirts but also CD's and books specific to the monster. The interior has some wonderful replicas of the monster that are more than life-size that make forvwonderful picture taking! It's a wonderful experience, and the owner is extremely friendly. Pricing of anything within the museum is reasonable. The location of the museum is in downtown Sutton, and it's surrounded by a variety of old buildings that are interesting. There's a little bistro within a very short walking distance of the museum if you feel like getting something to eat. Parking is on the street and can be a little bit challenging to locate if you're there during the busiest times which would be on weekends and holidays. The street parking is free. NOTE additionally, throughout the town of Sutton, there is Flatwood Monster acknowledgements such as a giant Flatwood Monster chair that you can sit in for a great picture taking opportunity! As well, some signage and other Flatwood Monster novelties that you wouldn't expect to come across! The owner of the museum made all of these exterior novelties! A great effort by him that makes the Flatwood Monster experience larger and...
Read moreGreat tourist trap.
This place has everything a good tourist trap should have except a public bathroom. I enjoyed learning about the Flatwoods Monster and even got to buy some postcards and crush a penny. The exhibits are a little dated and repetitive, but the information is still worth a quick read.
You probably don't need to budget much time for your visit. I was satisfied in about 15 minutes.
Logistically, parking was very easy, but that may be because there wasn't much else going on in Sutton. If I visit again, I hope I get to see more development (Flatwoods Monster related or otherwise) throughout the town.
Be sure to watch the video with obviously copyrighted stock images that's playing in the front of the building if you stop. The audio is amusing, and the images' watermarks are, too.
If you want to do other things in the area, you'll find a lot of good tourist rack cards on one side of the building. It seems like there's no lack of interesting things to do in the...
