Love smithpoint although residents are charged 9$ and non-residents are charged 19$, best part was staying at campgrounds and forgot pass at campsite, they now only allow 1 car per site and asked if could just drop off fishing gear (poles, waders, tackle bag, etc) along with food, drinks, charcoal, offered to leave license and green key to drop it quick and retrieve license and mid 20s year old guy refused to let me drive in to my own campsite, don't like to use as an excuse and sound like a victim but have severe injuries and disabled but made zero effort to help me to my own campsite said have them bring pass out then they can't get back in, there's nowhere to park without being ticketed could pay 9$ to park but already paid for campsite, completely unreasonable to not allow a disabled person to leave license and let me drop items off, but when some people get a taste of power lose the ability to be reasonable, instead make someone disabled to carry countless items instead of letting me drive to my own campsite, mid 20s dirty blonde hair, under 6 foot slightly thick is a tyrant and started the day off bad, hope someone sees this and let's him know this is unreasonable to do to a paying camper but probably will do nothing outside of the tyrant smith point is a beautiful beach with nice campsites so enjoy the beach and try to ignore power hungry campsite toll booth...
Read moreAs a seasoned camper that has traveled the country, I can honestly say that this is the dregs compared to what is available across the country. While the staff are pleasant, the facilities are absolutely filthy. The water is wonderful yet with nothing but brush be ready be sun baked at day and wind blown at night. (Actually this is kinda nice) This is not a particular problem just something to be prepared for.
The lots are a bit tight and littered of bottle caps & cigarette butts, what was not manageable was a large, rusted, spear-like projection from the ground of out site.
The water views are truly wonderful and worth the trouble so long as at night you are okay amongst a tipsy bunch of hardcore regulars who feel like they own the place.
Sadly for long island this is one of the premier spots compared to what’s available, I do believe we have the Suffolk County Government to thank for the management this place.
(I would love to see a KOA franchise or another team take over and make this place amazing for all)
Would we stay here again? Yes, we will return because as I said this is one of the best spots LI has to offer. I would simply love to see the local government step away from the wheel and let local businesses manage different aspects of the grounds. This place is a cash cow and could be the best in the country if it were...
Read moreBeautiful beach 5 stars for the beach. In fact looking closely almost all the 5 star reviews are for the beach not the campground. So I agree 5 stars for the beach. This review is specifically for the campground it was an overall disappointing camping experience. No camp store for forgotten essentials just an ice cream store. Closest Walmart is 25 minutes away. Sites are very small and close together. Water hook up is shared between each two sites so our water was nowhere near our electric it was like 35 feet away and we couldn't hook it up right away until I went and bought a new hose. But the worst part is the bathroom situation. There is just one urinal and one stall for 30 campsites. Nearly everytime I have needed the bathroom I have to wait in line like it's a ride in an amusement park. This is ridiculous. My final point, they lock the shower side of the bathroom during the night, 630am showers still locked. I dont think I will...
