This park is being ruined, bike clubs that don't park their cars in the only parking lot are coming in and cutting down trees for jumps, cutting paths into forest , painting the ground and trees to mark paths they are tying orange plastic tape to branches of trees to mark a path for their club that plastic then breaks off and enters the pond and small rivers that go to the ocean fish eat it and are sterilized. The restaurant across the street for two years was trying to use the only 8 car parking field for valet parking (see youtube video) they were double parking cars so no one could get in. The worst is the old pines barons part of this park that had signs marking it protected pine barrens the zoning was illegally flipped by local corrupt politicians and county employee… crooks and they turned that part of the park into a housing development that everyone in town knows all the houses were taken by connected families before they even flipped the zoning or broke ground. The people from this housing development are very rude and nasty people if you meet them in the park they have also cut down trees on park property that block their view of their new picture windows they have big picture windows on the second floor looking into the park they want more view so they just illegally cut a square hole for their picture windows. All these house were built illegally and there children are ones who started cutting down trees for jumps and bike trails now theirs a bike club that does it as well. Most people never cared about bikers these ones are different this groups is now actively spray painting paths, cutting the trees they told me when I walking into the park this park is for bikes only they guy was not a local guy and as rude as they come, most people are friendly. If you have children keep them close there's a woman and a guy two people not related that walk unleashed pitbulls and rots, they will attack you the woman tried to control her dog from attacking me and a friend one day and left after the pitfall had bit her hard several times she had no control, for a while dog waking services were leaving doggy diamonds on the first part of the trail a girl with 4 dogs always different ones. These people in this housing development are something they stop people from entering the park. On one side a of the park the old houses on the Northport golf course there used to be parking. Their connected they will call a politician the 5 houses in the little circle have old man and his wife they will walk down and tell if you park there I'm going to give you a ticket and then a Town of Huntington parking vehicle will show up later and write you a ticket, you can't copy this ticket the crooked attendant is using a special ink take a photo only this is part of their crooked system to hide their name for doing illegal favors. On the only parking side of the park the people in the illegal pine barrens house development these are million dollar houses used connections again to make sure the overgrown entrance was never cut by the town, it was like a safari getting to the path when you did you found out the pine barrens crooks took big lawn mowers and cut a big beautiful path for themselves, and anyone who could find away in they also put their couches and chairs over their fence to sit in the park illegally taking park property as theirs. This Suffolk county park in the 1980’s was a protected Pine Barrens they illegally flipped the zoning everyone gets a big bribe and %20 of the park is gone to rich rude nasty people who now tell you what are you doing in this park. THIS PARK HAS BEEN RUIN BY GREED, OUT OF TOWN BIKE CLUBS, THE KIDS AND FAMILIES THAT STRADDLE THE PARK IN THE FORMER PINE BARRENS HOUSING DEVELOPMENT THEY WERE ILLEGALLY ZONED AND THE MOST CONNECTED THUGS AND PEOPLE GOT THE BEST SPOT BEFORE THEIR EVEN BUILT HOUSES ! Corruption killed the Makamah pine barrens and the rude nasty people who live their now this park is heading to Youtube I am starting to post this summer videos of these bums for the...

If going by GPS, the parking area may be poorly marked. Google Maps just took me to a random spot in the road with nothing around. Instead, look for where Makamah Road dead ends into Fort Salonga Road. At the northwest corner is a small gravel lot and the start of the trail.

I still have no clue how, but we hiked for a couple of hours and were apparently nowhere near the actual trail. According the sign at the start of the path, you begin on a short 1/3rd mile yellow trail which leads you to the white trail, which is a two mile loop. I assumed we had made it to the white trail, but I checked my GPS after a while and we were on the far other corner of the park. I guess we missed a turn or something, but I didn't see anything obvious. We weren't the only people that had that happen. It doesn't really matter, it was still a nice hike.

Check yourself for ticks ASAP! I hopped in the shower as soon as I got home and found a large tick making its...

The trails are poorly marked, poorly maintained, and loads of trash. A total lack of trail maintenance makes several of the trails you find unpassable. This has caused quite a bit of trailblazing and subsequent erosion. I wish I'd brought a bag to help carry out some of the trash. Also, it's interesting to be on one of the few marked trails, only to run into a sign claiming I was about to enter private property, with a threat of prosecution. I'm not sure how that happens in county owned land. Trail marking needs improvement and consistency. Anyway, it was good to get out in the woods for a hike, and an additional workout...

So, I am wondering who I donate $5 to, so that they can get a can of paint to clearly mark the white trail? You look at the board before entering the park andit clearly shows a large loop as if it is the only trail. You walk into the park and eventually get lost because there are at least a dozen other trails you weren't aware of and lost sightings of the poorly (absent) white trail markings. We ran into 4 other people, and they were all uncertain of how to get back. Time to mark the trail better!

Started with the yellow trail to reach to somewhat on the grey trail. Would request to put some benches for anyone to rest . The trail is extremely steep with rain making it more slippery. Be careful with your steps and be mindful of the nature. Good place for bird watching. Beautiful Nature preserve to spend quality time.
