Unfortunately, like many other wine tasting groups in this review section, we had a very negative first impression of the business by the woman greeting us. The winery opened at 10am, and we arrived via our chartered bus at approximately 10:10 am. By the time we were all out of the vehicle and ready to enter a few minutes later, we were swiftly scolded by a short blonde haired woman that we needed to get inside immediately to be accommodated for our reserved wine tasting. Of note, the vineyard had just opened and no other patron was on the property. We then quickly entered. Instead of explaining the time constraints that were being placed upon us, we were told that we likely could no longer do the tasting and it would be cancelled. This was very disheartening, as this was our first winery stop in the Finger Lakes region and we had pre-paid through a partnering business for the tasting. A more welcoming solution would have been to calmly explain the problem and kindly offer solutions. We ultimately were pleased with the alternative wine flights on the outdoor deck, however we had to bring in our bus driver to negotiate with this unkind woman in order to do the flights. Of note, it was unclear if the flights were worth a smaller monetary value than what we paid for. We were surprised by this negative experience, as the region often sees large parties celebrating a variety of events, commonly bachelorette parties. The entire staff seemed taken aback by our party of 10 celebrating the bride. We later ran into a bachelorette party that we passed on the way out of Wagner, who also shared a similar story relating to timing for wine tastings and the attitude of the same woman.
The best part of the experience at Wagner was the view. We enjoyed the wine, service at the flight bar was minimum at best. We were expected to know enough about their wide selection of wines in order to select a flight option, despite us never having wine from this region. The severs seem perturbed to be asked about the wines. While we liked the wine, we did not want to provide our business any further by purchasing bottles or other memorabilia.
Overall, would not recommend going to Wagner. There are much better wineries and breweries all over Seneca Lake with more friendly, knowledgeable staff, better wines, happier people all around, and just as pretty views. I would instead recommend Fulkerson, Lakewood, and Barnstormer for wines, and Grist Iron Brewery for beer/cider. Do not waste your time and...

John at the tasting bar is a true gem when it comes to his knowledge and expertise in the realm of wine and history. As soon as we sat at the bar, we knew we were in the presence of a master. His passion for wine was palpable as he effortlessly guided us through the wine tasting list, offering detailed descriptions and fascinating anecdotes about each bottle/grape varietal selected. His depth of knowledge extended far beyond the flavors and regions; he seamlessly weaved in historical context, bringing each wine to life with captivating stories that enhanced my appreciation for them. John's ability to recommend the perfect wine based on our preferences was uncanny, and we were consistently delighted with his selections. Not only did he enhance my understanding of wine, but he also broadened my horizons by introducing me to unique and lesser-known varieties. If you're looking for an unforgettable wine experience that combines expertise, passion, and a touch of history, John at the tasting bar is an absolute must-visit⌠plus he personalized...
Read moreAs I sit here enjoying this Wagner 2020 Merlot, I think back to the great conversation John Pulos and I recently had regarding Merlots in the Fingerlakes. This Merlot is truly an exceptional one, a masterpiece that is a keeper! Not only this wine, but all their vinifera and library wines are outstanding. Wagner is a great vineyard with truly remarkable leadership at the helm (John & Debbie Wagner). Their leadership is elevated by staff who makes each and every tasting memorable. John Pulos, being that person who goes above and beyond to make your tasting exceptional. As a restauranteur, author of wine and food, and an educator, John brings the FLX wine tasting experience to life during your wine tasting. From comparing vertical library wines (Iâm a wine club member) to tasting reds vs whitesâŚâŚand all that lies in-between. John explains each and every wine that he gives you to taste. This elevates your awareness of the wines and their tastes. Allowing you to compare and contrast each one. John is highly knowledgeable not only in Wagnerâs wine, but the greater FLX region. He speaks of this well as he shares the history of FLXâs growth over the years from Dr. Franks arrival to now. This is Johnâs passion to teach and educate on wine. I truly say, he has left a great impression upon me, for which I am most grateful. I have tasted with John many times. Each and every time I sit with him I learn something new about wine and my path to enjoying it. I always appreciate my time with John Pulos and enjoy the continued education I get. He is a remarkable man whom we in FLX Aficionados kindly refer to as the âBible of the FLXâ you cannot go wrong with a wine tasting from...
