The Museum of Wayne County history is an amazing place to learn about the history of Wayne County, NY, and everything it had to offer from the 1800s to modern day. Located on Butternut street in Lyons, NY, the Museum offers an extensive variety of artifacts, pictures, tools, and more to explore. The Sheriff's office and housing offers you a look into how they operated and adapted to the future, while still being able to expand and grow stronger through the years. The jail cells are creepy and haunted, but you will have fun exploring them and the common area where the prisoners hung out. The only execution in Wayne County happened here by hanging, and the chair they used is still on display in great condition. The most impressive thing about the Museum is how well preserved and cared for all of the artifacts and the grounds are. The staff here care and are very friendly and will answer any questions you could possibly have. When you're done exploring, the staff will take you to the carriage house, and you can explore even more things and the ways they traveled back then. If you like history and how far we've come, this is the place for you! I'd recommend several trips because they have a revolving display of items to explore each trip you take. I will give the Museum of Wayne County History a solid 5 stars and I highly recommend a visit that you will not regret....
Read moreIf you are looking for a little, unique hole in the wall full of fantastic things, this is the place! It's not expensive! The guided tour was only $23, and well worth it! There are actual drawing on the wall from prisoners that were there! The spot where a man was hung is still there! Don't be fooled because it looks small from the outside... It's not! It's huge inside!
Every single room, every piece of furniture took me back to the past on things that my mother and grandmothers had in their homes. Everything was remarkable! It was so well preserved and our guide Ms. Rhea (I hope I spelled it right, or I'm somewhere close to it), was awesome! You get to actually see where the prisoners were housed!
If you want a field trip to take your children, students, or just because you love history, this is definitely a place to come! We will be back just to look around again, and for the new exhibit coming in March! Don't miss out on history that is so...
Read moreI have had so many great experiences here! We've attended antique sales the last two years, and found wonderful treasures at great prices. I've been to their haunted house around Halloween time twice as well and, for a small, local haunt, it was very impressive. They did a great job transforming the place while emphasizing the existing creepy factors! But my favorite visit was during normal museum operation, early afternoon on a weekday. Other than the friendly and helpful woman who was working that day, my fiance and I were the only people there. We got to wander and look at all the fascinating things that have been a part of the building's history, cram into the tiny cells that once were living quarters for those who were jailed, and admire the scrawled art work those men had left on their walls, and spend as much time as we liked just enjoying the place in our own way. It was awesome and we will definitely be...
