Beautiful campground on northern shore of Lake Champlain. Views of the Champlain Islands of VT are gorgeous. We stayed site 47, late Sept, 2021 in 32 foot travel trailer. Some sites are very sandy (47 was), others on lawn, some with longer rigs could have issues with backing in as they are on 90 degree angles to road, not angled. Nice new style fire rings seem to be on most sites. Can be a bit windy this time of year and down in low 50s at night but the lapping of the waves is lovely. Beach is very well maintained and very wide, water is very shallow for a long way out into the lake making it nice for small children. Bath, Shower and laundry facilities are outstanding-buildings are only a few years old and very well maintained. Our 8 yr old and 6 yr old grandsons loved the playground equipment and riding their bikes all over the campground. We wish they would upgrade sites to better level them and at least have electricity at all sites. Potable water spigot by dump station should be better marked-is just painted white. Dump station is best layout and modern we have seen in 8 years of RV travel. Overall an amazing place, quiet this time of year (late Sept) lots of vacant sites. Plattsburg, as a state college town offers some great restaurants, shops and boutiques. Love the multi dealer antique shops too. Big box stores not far away one exit down RT 87 if needed for supplies, gear, etc. Norma J's breakfast/lunch place a short way down RT 9 very good but a tad pricey. We do not recommend Gus's Red Hots- we thought it would be a traditional diner menu but it is very limited, not even salads or main courses- just burgers and breakfast. Ferry to VT on Cumberland Head road is great trip to VT. Took our children only 53 minutes door to door to Essex Junction, so perhaps 1 hr to downtown Burlington VT. Easy day trip to Montreal once border issues clear up due to Pandemic/Covid...
Read moreThere's a good variety of campsites here. Both with and without electrical. Good for both RV and tent camping.
You can get a site here with some trees which surprisingly give it a woodsy feel being the main feature of this park is a beach on Lake Champlain.
There's plenty of restrooms. The one building has multiple showers that double as handicapped accessible bathrooms. The only annoying thing about those are the showers only have one temperature and must be button pressed again every ten seconds or so. Holding the button in wont keep it running.
The restroom near my site had cleaning staff show up early in the morning though. Could be problematic if you are trying to sleep in or if you are somebody who showers in the morning. Maybe this would be better scheduled for afternoon.
There's another restroom building closer to the lake that has two of those handicapped shower restrooms if I recall correctly.
The park office has ice and firewood available for sale.
The beach on Lake Champlain is nice, sometimes there are waves depending on the conditions.
The only thing is the life guards seem a bit understaffed or something. They don't get down to the beach until about 11:00 or 11:30 AM. And the area designated for swimming might be smaller on a day with fewer lifeguards. If I recall, swimming is until about 6:30 or 6:45 PM.
Good experience staying at Cumberland Bay State Park.
Much better camping experience than another state park in NY, Fish Creek Pond Campground. There it was so disappointing I left shortly after trying to...
Read moreReally nice campground. The sites are very exposed so there's little to no privacy. But the location was great and besides one or 2 occasionally loud people it was quiet even on a Saturday night.
Lots of RVs but based on the setups, it looks like a lot of them are there for for the whole season, and thus they are pretty quiet and respectful of the rules.
The check-in booth is staffed all night, and they sell ice, firestarters, and wood. Wood was cheap but wet enough it was difficult to get a fire started.
Large and clean bathrooms with showers, that appear to be recently renovated.
I've been swimming here in the past and the biggest disappointment is the tiny area you're forced in to by the lifeguards. The roped off section didn't allow me to go any deeper than my knees. That's unfortunate considering the massive size of...
