The Grundy Forest would have got 10 Stars if it was an option! The Firey Gizzard trail is absolutely stunning! I've been coming here for years and each time you are transported to a majestic wonderland of raw nature. The hike is easy to navigate, trees are marked throughout with indicators of the trail ahead. There are beautiful natural water holes as well as magnificent waterfalls. I have taken a lot of friends and family here throughout the years and everyone always comments on how beautiful it is. I highly recommend! Also, for those with children, my 5 year old son was able to keep up and enjoyed himself thoroughly! There will be spots where help will be needed for smaller people. I do not recommend for individuals whom have knee or back issues. There is rocks and stairs you will have to descend and ascend onto. Parking is usually very accessible, however in the busier season you may have to park and walk to the...
Read moreKnow to the locals as Grundy Lakes, this location/yourdestination, is a part of the incredible South Cumberland State Park. Grundy County has one of the largest designated State Natural Wilderness Areas east of the Mississippi. It's is called the Savage Gulf. Grundy Forest State Natural Area is a testament to the local residents who totally transformed this area from what was described historically as an "inferno". Now reviewers describe it as " The atmosphere is beautiful, the vibes are good and the locals are beyond friendly." I could not agree more. But during the 1880's the infamous Lone Rock Stockade was here and it has a dark history. The photos are of the old coke ovens on the hills on either side of what is. now the lakes. If you like history come check it out and see this amazing transformation and a testament to the Grundy County citizens who have always lived here. Even after the coal and...
Read moreThis is one of the most picturesque hikes and beautiful trails my wife and I have been on. This weekend we backpacked from Foster Falls and set up camp at Camp Wilds campsite. The next day we hiked 6 miles to Raven's Point, then 6 miles back. A good day of hiking for us both and very strenuous. If you hike a good portion of this trail there will be gorges to climb down and up throughout the hike. Some sections require a sharp focus to navigate as there are steep drops around you, which gets tough if you are already tired. Bring lots of water, snacks, headlamp (if possibly hiking in the dark). Nevertheless, there are some spectacular waterfalls to see along the way, which are especially good in the springtime after lots of rainfall. You WILL NOT be disappointed with this hike. After finishing up at foster falls, head 10 miles up the road to Tracy City to the Dutch Maid Bakery for...
