Very nice quiet place to visit. Note that there is no parking on the roadsides leading up to the lighthouse parking area. The parking area has maybe 15 places and 1 handicap accessible parking place. The handicapped parking space is in the first row of spaces closest to the ocean and farthest from the entrance to the parking lot. The way it works is you drive up to the parking lot and if you see an open space in either of the 2 rows of spaces you go for it. If the lots full which you can see from the entrance to the lot or in our case there’s already cars lined up on the entrance road. You wait at the entrance to the lot and if a car leaves your next to go take the open spot. We didn’t really wait that long and actually it’s pretty easy just wait til a car comes out and in you go. While we were waiting on the entrance road there was a 10 point buck grazing 15 ft from our car at the edge of the woods. The deer didn’t seem least bit scared to graze and watch us, however it’s not hunting season and you couldn’t hunt in this area anyway so he knows he’s safe. If you walk to the farthest part of the lot away from the road, there are restrooms available and a trail down to the water to the right of restrooms. The trail is good and the stairs going down to the ocean are very well built and sturdy, solid as a rock. When you get to the bottom of the stairs there are stone natural steps further down to the ocean. Beyond the stairs the steps vary in height and ease of making your way down or up. If your not to steady on your feet there are observation decks part way down the stairs with views of the water and the lighthouse. It’s a very scenic and peaceful place at...
Read moreWe visited on a late Sunday afternoon/evening in late June 2025.
There were a ton of people here but luckily we were able to get a spot as we drove in and our other family member did too but there were some cars that were waiting later and some even turned around.
There are 2 pit toilets in the parking lot area and trash cans. The lot does not fit more than 20 cars and it's a very popular spot especially around sunset. We were also pretty early in the season so I'd be scared to see what it's like mid-summer.
Facing the water if you go down the trail to the left you can climb out onto the roads to get the icon view and picture many people take here. There were so many people and everyone tries to get as close as possible. I found the only way to really get the shot was to climb out, which can be dangerous especially with little ones and then use software to just crap people out.
From the parking lot you can go to the right and that takes you to the lighthouse itself. There is someone who lives there so do not disturb the people in the house. But there is a nice view point and some historical old bells you can look at. I honestly think there are way better things to do in the park and just the sheer number of people kind of ruined the experience here for us. Go over to the Ship Harbor Trail just down the street and it's much less crowded and have a much better time exploring there. Just as epic views, minus...
Read moreBEWARE OF THE SPEED BUMPS COMING DOWN THE ROAD IF YOU HAVE A LOWER VEHICLE! I was coming down the road fairly early in the day (no on else was on the road with me) and was driving the speed limit when I came across the first bump. I kept an eye out for more, and on the second one, I went very slow over it, and it still bottomed out my car (Volvo S60). I ended up having to have my car towed back to Ellsworth (the only garage with availabilityto look at my car), and it did, in fact, bend part of my exhaust into the cab of my car as well activated my ABS. We ended up having to rent a car last minute from the airport (at $170 a day) to be able to get see the rest of the sights and even to get back to the motel. PLEASE BE CAREFUL! (Second picture is of my free Souvenir tape that the tow driver took off 2 spots on the bottom of my car.) As for the lighthouse itself, it is small but charming. The parking lot is very small, and the public restrooms are a fancy outhouse. There are large steep rocks at the end of the side path that has the best viewing vantage points. There is no real way to view it if you have mobility issues. We went around 9 on a Monday, and the crowds were manageable with no wait for parking. Overall, I am glad we went but wouldn't want to wreck my car and potentially ruin my whole...
