The main viewpoint near the visitor center makes it pretty crowded. I went for sunrise and there were a good number of people there. It's an excellent view and easily accessible so I'm giving it 5 stars, but here are better views with fewer people the farther west you go on the South Rim Trail. If you have the time I highly recommend walking at least part of the rim trail if you want some isolation (catch the red bus at the west end of the village then walk between a shuttle stop or two). My favorite parts of the rim are the areas between the viewpoints.

Read moreEven if you have few minutes to visit Grand Canyon, visit Mather Point, it is simply stunning. With so many different rock formations and colors, it will leave you speechless. It can get very crowded as it is a short walk down from the visitor center, so visit on the weekday if you can and stay till maybe 20 minutes or so after the sunset. Sunset views are second to none, nothing compares to Grand Canyon!

There is a visitor center and gift shop nearby and you can wander along the rim trail. This is definitely the most popular spot on the south rim, so I can get crowded.
