Read moreIt is unbelievably disgusting and inhumane that the only option for wheelchair rentals in the park is contracted to this company, which appears to close randomly with no warning or communication with park rangers. It's unconscionable that such a basic service that should be consistently available to make the park more accessible to those with injuries or disabilities is allowed to be gatekept at the whim of whichever three or four people are working the shop that day. (This is to say nothing of the fact that wheelchair rentals are $12, which also feels rather unethical, but I would have gladly taken the option to pay even more than that for a rental if it meant an injured or handicapped friend/family member could have a normal day in the park).
My friend sprained her ankle a day before we were set to go to the Grand Canyon, and she was able to get looked at in the ER early enough that we thought it would still be worth going since it seemed like there was a decent amount of accessibility options in the park. After confirming with a ranger that wheelchair rentals were available, we went over to the shop to ask, and we were turned down by the barista working the register, who, to his credit, tried to check with someone in the back to see if it would be possible. One other person also seemed purely delighted to reiterate to us that wheelchair rentals were unavailable, which left an extremely bad taste in my mouth.
I fully understand that on days with inclement weather, bike rentals might induce liability, but a wheelchair to help injured and disabled folks to navigate parking lots and paved trails seems like such a basic necessity for a company to have such impunity to gatekeep.
It's also commercially idiotic - don't you want some amount of rental revenue on days that bikes aren't being rented out? The practice is senseless and again, inhumane, on...
