On a cross country road trip, we were looking forward to staying at Tucumcari, New Mexico and visiting historic Route 66 that runs through the downtown area. Unfortunately, some newer chain hotels on the interstate have sapped much of the business from Route 66. Many main street businesses are simply gone. But there is hope as some of the old motels along Route 66 are being restored into upscale vintage motels...motels that keep their historical charm while at the same time incorporating modern, comfortable design in their rooms. All that to say that historic Route 66 in Tucumcari is not dead. There is hope. And I consider the Route 66 Monument as a symbol of that hope. I would love to return in a few years and see Route 66 thriving once again with several cool refurbished vintage motels and interesting museums and restaurants.
