What a hidden gem! The parking lot has plenty of space. The building is breathtaking, not just the double ended marble staircase! We were greeted by the nicest woman in Yankton and she explained the museum in great detail and that really starts the visit off right. This place is wheelchair friendly with an elevator and we even spotted a wheelchair by the stairs incase you brought grandma who can only walk for a bit. Lots of bathrooms and drinking fountains. One of the most interesting museums I've been to. It was $13 for one adult and one child. Gift shop has great local stuff for sale and there is a donation box in the back. Make the trip, learn about many parts of our history that could have been erased. Amazing art all over the building!

The Mead Cultural Education Center is truly a fantastic piece of art in and of itself. Built in 1909 on the campus of the "Dakota Hospital for the Insane" as the women's ward. No expense was spared in the construction of the building with granite block walls, terrazzo floors, hand painted details in the ceiling trays and a grand Italian marble staircase, the building is enough to draw you in. But the history inside will enhance your visit tremendously, with a brand new children's museum and Lewis and Clark exhibit as well as the entire Dakota Territorial Museum collection and Yankton College archives, I promise you will not leave disappointed.

⸻ Such a neat little gem in Yankton! The Mead Museum is beautifully kept, everything was super clean, including the bathrooms on every floor. There’s a nice mix of historical info and hands-on displays. Not a ton specifically for kids, but there were a few fun areas they really enjoyed, like the covered wagon setup, the little play boat, and the interactive displays. The lady working the front desk was incredibly kind and welcoming, and the small gift shop had adorable handmade items at really reasonable prices. A great little stop for families or anyone interested in local history!

Despite the other rather complementary reviews I read before my visit, I was very, very disappointed. The museum is obviously under construction/renovation so I can only hope that my visit was at a bad time (July 2019). There were essentially no artifacts on display. The Lewis and Clark "exhibit" was just a bunch of signs. Reading them through, 100% from start to finish gave no more information than Wikipedia. The $8.00 admission was highway robbery given the lack of quality inside. While the building is beautiful, inside and out, don't expect to see anything besides the architecture and reading material hung on the walls.

What a...
