If you have never been to the island, plan a trip. One day excursion and you will learn A LOT about the first Navel Base on the West Coast. The golf course is the oldest west of the Mississippi. Walking down the tree lined streets will take you back to the mid 1800s...with the historic everything! Houses, captains quarters (mansions, in excellent condition), lieutenant's houses and then old cement bunkers on the other side of the street. Beyond the bunkers are full funtioning dry docks restoring ships. The Chapel is a must see! It could be an all day history lesson or a quick drive through a period of time...or park here and take the ferry into San Francisco. Mare Island is the first stop on the ferry. You'll always get a good seat and...

Through the guard stations. Go on board the ship I was working on. Then go home. Went back last weekend with my grandchildren. Took the tour Our tour guide was great. Loved St Peter's church. Kids saw a couple of ships in dry dock. They loved it. Sadly, I didn't get to the cemetery. Will have to try again. But worth checking out and learning the rich history of Mare Island. Read moreI suppose I could rate the land mass known as Mare Island. Nice piece of land. No residential areas on the actual former military base area, just commercial and industrial businesses. Decent view. Roads are unconjested so it's easy in, easy out. I heard about this traffic control company that has a yard based out there called WBE. Which is why I'm familiar with the area. An excellent traffic control company by the way. Very proffesional and excellent employment opportunities with advancement on hands on skills, document filing, customer relations, equipment maintanence, and real world applications. Definitely a go to for all your traffic control and...
