We visited on a Thursday afternoon around 2PM in early November. This was our 23rd Virginia State Park for the VA State Park Trail Quest.
Parking was a little confusing as there weren't any marked spots, but we saw a couple of cars just parked on sides of the dead end cul-de-sac, so we did the same. There were at least 2 other cars with us in the parking lot the entire time we were visiting. There were 2 people fishing in Oxbow Lake, and others were walking their dogs.
There is no sign for the state park and only a temporary one inside the information board on the other side of the dam. There were no bathrooms we saw in the parking area or even a trash can. The riverside trail looked pretty well maintained, but we did not stray too far from it.
The park office is located about half a mile away in town. They are renting space from the university. This facility has bathrooms and 30 min parking right outside. Good idea to call ahead, and we had a ranger who was on-site until 4:30pm. They have a locked cabinet of park merch you can buy from when someone is present, and they are in the process of getting their vending machine up that visitors can buy from even if staff is not available. We asked, and there are 3 full-time staff and 1 part-time for for the entire park.
We would probably visit again if we were local. It would be nice to see once more of the infrastructure has been completed. Apparently, there is a completed master plan, but they are waiting on funding to be passed by the state. The park ranger we interacted with was amazing, and she was super friendly. We wish them the best of luck getting this park up to par...
Read moreVery nice State Park! We walked the mostly level loop around the lake. Several trail loops to choose from. Longest loop was 3.3 miles. Once you cross the dam there's a long display board showing the trail map and flora fauna in the park. Three access points from the road for this loop. Restroom was locked during our mid January visit. Plenty of room for parking. No bicycles allowed on trail but the looked like there would be plenty of room on the loop...
Read moreBike this place frequently but as of 2021 and becoming a state park they closed off multiple trails to bicycles only allowing us on one of the originals. I think they need to re-evaluate the situation and let bikes on all the trails. The original sugar hill riders wanna ride. One plus of the state funding is all of the trails are...
