Lovely park with gorgeous river views. Interesting rocks and stone ruins to look at in several places. Can get extremely muddy and slippery in sections.
As I posted on my review of the trailhead parking area, this is mostly an out and back park. Not quite linear, as there's more than one trail in at least one place, and there are some sort of trails in other places, but pretty close. To do a real loop without repeated views, you would need to go a couple of miles or more and go way around through some neighborhoods (and around a golf course in one direction) and walk back on neighborhood streets. Would love to see the park authority create real trails that would allow a large figure eight.
In some places, there are helpful small signs indicating the distance to other parks or points. Of note. There does not seem to be much signage - not that I saw, anyway - explaining the various stone ruins. Would welcome interpretive signs at each of those.
Most of these trails are reasonably flat, but there are places where you have to take a huge step up to get into and then go over a bridge. Some of the bridges are not in great shape and need repair or lean a lot or both. Some parts of the trail suddenly have a dropoff of three or four feet where you have to scramble down a muddy hill and over and up. Some parts of the trail pretty much drop off next to the water and you have to be very careful if it's muddy not to fall in. Obviously overuse causes some of this erosion. There were also a few sections where the brush was very hard to avoid on both sides and would be very ticky once it gets even a tiny bit warmer.
I'll definitely be back, for more geocaching and walking.
Would be nice for the park authority to modify the more hazardous sections of trail to make them more passable and to improve...
Read more20240420 Can't believe I have been here in 6 years. I hiked the trail today, and it was a real nice hike along the Potomac River. Spotted a snake in the base of the tree. Might want to keep your kids and pets on the trail.
6 years ago...At first, after I parked, I had to get on the golf course path to get to the Riverfront Park. After a short walk, there is a sign on the right pointing to where the Riverfront Park is. You will need to walk down this gravel path to get there. I stayed on the golf course path. I didn't realize the trail started on the right between the golf course and the river. I continued to walk on the golf course section, and eventually crossed over onto the trail. The trail is very narrow, barely fits 2 average built persons, and if you have people coming from another direction, all of you will need to make adjustments to pass each other. It's narrow enough for 1 bike comfortably, but 2 side by side, it will take special skills. The view of the Potomac River was not as pretty as I was hoping. It is definitely not Great Falls. It is still nice to walk along. When I visited this after, it was windy, quiet and peaceful. The golf course was empty and I saw 3 people on bikes, 3 walking the trail, and a group of men going fishing with a dog off leash. I did also see someone playing fetch with a dog off leash. Just be careful if you or your dog has issues with dogs being off leash I do love the view of the golf course, clean...
Read moreCame in for breakfast intending to order al a carte and was talked into getting the buffet. Unfortunately as we headed to get food the staff was breaking down the food. I asked if they were going to replenish and was told that they were setting up for the next food service. So we were scrounging for what was left and found cold waffles, raw bacon, chobani yougurt, no fruit/berries...you get the idea. Not worth $25. The server was nice and got us a plate of berries from the back. Omelette was made to order, so fresh. After a tepid flat bread that took over an hour to get on Friday and this experience, I would not recommend any of the food options we tried over...
