I like this pier. I have fished this pier many times and I have Videos up on YouTube. I choose to come on the weekends when its 24 hours. It does cost so be prepared, you don't need a license the pier license covers you. It is a long walk to the end. Be aware of your surroundings. I have always enjoyed all the piers in the tidewater area. Some you get discounts for being a Vet, a senior or having your own current fishing license so be sure to ask all the piers. I leave and come back throughout the day so make sure you get a wrist band and don't remove it. Bring your cooler and your bait and a jug of clean water to clean fish if you choose to. ALSO Make sure you know the Fishing regulations, what fish you can keep, what bait you can use and what seasonal regulations are in effect. You do not want a ticket. Read moreSign reads, “Everyone pays, fishing or not.” First, may we suggest less rude wording? Maybe explain what you use the money for? It would be nice to assume it funds cleanup efforts, but, doesn’t appear to, considering the amount of trash. Most of the trash is probably from the restaurant, so, perhaps they should pay for the cleanup. I suppose, if it’s a private pier, they have every right to charge whatever they want, but, we won’t be paying it, and they should be held accountable for their litter.
Secondly NINE DOLLARS? What could possibly cost $9 a person? Who is going to pay $9 to walk down a pier? I love piers but will never pay $9, especially without any reasoning. $1 sure, suggested $5 donation, even better.

Read moreI used to go fishing here when I was a teenager. A lot of fun. Back then a neighboring-fishing guy told me that it was the longest fishing pier on the east coast. Not sure but the length of the pier is nothing to played with... I remember having to go to the restroom, it can be a walk, good exercise....UPDATE: I thought that this was the OLD James River Fishing Pier. which was over a mile long! This one is the new one. ""The old pier was a leftover section of the two-lane James River Bridge that stretched four miles from Newport News to Isle of Wight County. When the new four-lane bridge opened in 1982, there was talk of tearing the old bridge down. Wharton worked to keep a portion of it open, which became the fishing pier."" Source:...
