This is a hidden gem. There is an old manor house from the early 1800s that was owned and added to by a single family over 6+ generations before they sold the place as a museum. The museum is stuffed with period artifacts and farm equipment that was part of the estate or which have been donated to the museum in the last 30 years. Multiple original outbuildings with additional furnishings and equipment essential to life over the centuries. There is a fascinating room in the main house dedicated to women's life and suffrage drawn directly from the history of the area. No fee to enter, but donations are gratefully accepted. The only downside was that the introductory movie wasn't working this day, so we missed a little of the context of the property and the town as a bridgehead to the western frontier and the cumberland gap. THIS IS IMPORTANT, YOU NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO VISIT. The woman who manages the museum is very accommodating, just text or email her in advance to arrange a time and she acts as a guide as well. If you are staying in one of the state parks in western virginia, put this one your day trip lists. Takes...
Read moreAdorable place to learn about some very local history and some famous names that came through. You can, also, purchase local items by Authors or Artists. At one time they sold some postcards. You can by some cute things like wooden train whistle for kids. It won't take but a few moments to look about, as there are antique artifacts too...but it's a nice little place for tourists or locals to stop in. The museum is located in the Old Newbern road area and it's a lovely historical spot with other nearby interests. *I hope this area becomes MORE accessible to locals and tourists...more parking areas and...

Luckily, we saw Apri Martin when she was on her way out, and she was so kind to give us a tour. April put on the 12-minute entrance video, which was super informative and let us explore the entire museum and the barn, answering any and all of our questions. I was so glad that I got to go inside and learn more about the history, which was fascinating. The experience totally changed my perspective. It was definitely well...
