If you're into history, nature, and just a little bit of mystery, Stumphouse Tunnel is a must-visit. Originally intended to be a railroad tunnel in the 1850s, construction was halted due to lack of funding, and the tunnel was never completed. Today, it's a fascinating slice of South Carolina history tucked away in the Blue Ridge foothills.
The hike from the parking lot to the tunnel entrance is short—only about 3 minutes—but it is uphill, so be prepared for a quick little climb. Once you reach the entrance, the temperature noticeably drops, and the air turns cool and humid. Inside, the tunnel is incredibly dark and damp, with puddles and a bit of mud, so wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet. Definitely bring a flashlight or headlamp—after the first 20 feet, it’s pitch black.
There are bats in the tunnel, which adds to the eerie vibe, but they tend to stay high and out of the way. One of the coolest features is the acoustics—this place is absolutely amazing for singing. The sound echoes in the best way, making even a hum sound like a concert hall performance.
Overall, it’s a fun, quick adventure with a lot of character. Just don’t forget your flashlight and maybe a...
Read moreLots of things to do here. There's a beautiful waterfall right at the swimming hole. You can fish here, but be sure you get a day license if you're from out of state. Also some very excellent mountain bike trails that can keep you busy for a couple of hours easily. You will find bathrooms, picnic area, even a gazebo. And you're welcome to hike all of the mountain bike trails as well. There bi-directional so they're really safe for hikers.. they also have grills of varying sizes. They have a really big grill right next to the pavilion you could cook enough food for 20 people there. Finally went into the tunnel. So cool really really dark in there so bring your flashlight. As of June 2023 they have added several new trails. Only about another two or three extra miles but they're really cool. They've added a dual slalom course and some extra double Black diamond stuff go check it out. As of September 2023 they have added about five or six miles of new trails. The downhill sections are really fun. Okay a little update. They have named the trails. And there are...
Read moreThe Stumphouse Tunnel is an awesome site to see while in the Area. This tunnel is cut into the side of the mountain and was never finished and you can see old train tracks and trail rail cars on location. The overall site of how big this is, is crazy. It maintains a nice cool temperature year round and is a nice visit on a hot day! You can travel back as far as the steel doors that block you from going all the way back. I recommend bring a flashlight I recommend sneakers as the floor is wet There is also a little uphill trek you gotta make to it as well.
Update two years later, we came back to the area and had to stop by the Stumphouse tunnel again always a treat however, it’s very sad to see how much graffiti and how much damage has been done to the tunnel since the last visit, very disappointed in the city for letting it get that bad.
This is a main tourist attraction for the area, and the city or county should take better responsibility of keeping it family,...
