Inside the United States National Arboretum - which I just visited last Sunday - are the National Capital Columns. THIS IS A FREE ATTRACTION. Reminding me of the Acropolis in Athens, the National Capitol Columns date back almost 200 years and consist of the original columns from the Capitol building. When the Capitol was renovated, they were relocated to be a tourist attraction. At 11:00am on a Sunday, the Arboretum was busy but not packed and allowed for relaxed viewing and pictures. This jaw-dropping spectacle is located approx. half a mile from the parking area, so be prepared to walk. Bathrooms are hard to find at both the National Bonsai Museum (be sure to check this out too!) and the National Capital Columns so be sure to go at the Visitor Center before you walk the large Arboretum grounds.

I along with two friends took the metro there so it’s easily accessible for many. We went there on a Wednesday during spring break and there was no lines for anything nor as crowded as we thought it would be. Definitely a lot of walking but well worth it. The columns were amazing to look at up close and even just walking through the felid was nice because of the wind and sun. Definitely bring plenty of water and take breaks throughout. Great spot to go out sightseeing with friends and amazing photos.

If you ever want to see a monument to racism, here it is. The grand entrance to the park closed off because the city didn't want black people to have access. Then they put a curfew on the adjacent neighborhood and treated everyone like criminals. This move also devalued the land and made those same black folks with homes in the neighborhood worse off, adding to income inequality. Not to mention the federal government sold off parts of the park, literally the most biodiverse and sensitive part to a golf course developer. Even made a nice formal car entrance for the white folks to get to the golf course without having to engage with any of the black owned business or community. The way the federal government handled this whole area of DC has left a lasting scar on the community. Even with countless request to open the park back up to the people, it remains closed. Who needs a confederate statue when you can have an entire park dedicated to racism and...
