Absolutely a great place to hike. There’s 26 miles of hiking trails here! Fairly good scenery, lots of trails to choose from, very local so you don’t have to travel very far, also you can even camp out here.
Pro: If you’re in town and you want to hike but you don’t wanna really go anywhere this is the perfect spot to come. Hell it’s a good spot just to come in general, particular if you want to do some light backpacking, get your feet wet but not actually be too far from civilization. Best thing is the trails are even pretty well Marked so if you’re not good at navigation this is a good place to come.
Cons: If you’re looking somewhere that’s super quiet I would probably not recommend this area, because it is mostly quiet, but you can definitely hear the traffic from the road in some places. Also while the trails are pretty well marked, there are a lot of trails here, and a lot of nuisance trails if you will. Not that it’s a bad thing it means there’s more places to hike. But it does mean you have to pay good attention to the markers on the trails, otherwise you can end up not getting lost, but not hiking the exact path...
Read moreWhat a perfect spot to get away from the city and town and get out in nature! We need more places like this, and apparently, AEP is trying to develop through it. Come out, enjoy, and support all the hard work that the city and its many volunteers have put in to truly make this something special. Don't let all the trespassing sign from CSX deter you. (It did me a while back) It's confusing that the access to that trail is littered with them, but you must walk past them and cross the tracks to access the mountain. Lots of trails that vary from 1 mile up to 10 miles to explore. Park in the parking lot in front of the ballfield, walk between the ballfield and the red barn to locate the...
Read moreThis trail system is absolutely amazing! Every trail is clearly marked and there is a huge map that shows the length of trails and funny descriptions about each one. If you are a beginner or on a casual dog walk, stay on the "city" trails. They are close to the park and very easy to navigate. If you want more of a challenge, take purple/pink or blue/gold. The short but very steep black trail is more for experienced mountain bikers than hikers. This is my favorite trail system I've hiked, and I have been...
