Yellowstone National Park is overflowing with geothermal wonders, but Black Sand Basin stands out as a hidden gem. This easily accessible trail offers a captivating glimpse into the park's vibrant geyser basins,

A Feast for the Senses:

Colorful Hot Springs: Black Sand Basin isn't named for its sand (which is actually a reddish brown), but for the captivating colors of its hot springs. Expect vibrant turquoise hues in the Opalescent Pool, emerald greens in the aptly named Emerald Pool, and the fiery oranges and reds of Rainbow Pool.

Spouting Geysers: While not the tallest geysers in Yellowstone, Cliff Geyser and Spouter Geyser put on a frequent show. Witness the power and wonder of these geothermal wonders as they erupt and send plumes of steam skyward.

Aromatic Journey: The distinct scent of sulfur fills the air, a unique and strangely captivating reminder of the powerful geothermal forces at play beneath the surface.

Easy Exploration:

Short and Sweet: The Black Sand Basin trail is a short and easy 0.5-mile loop, perfect for visitors of all ages and abilities. Enjoy the sights and wonders without needing a long or strenuous hike.

Boardwalk Bliss: The entire trail is a well-maintained boardwalk, ensuring a safe and comfortable exploration for everyone. No need to worry about uneven terrain or getting muddy.

Family-Friendly Fun: The short length, accessible boardwalk, and captivating geothermal features make Black Sand Basin a perfect stop for families with young children. Spark their curiosity about the natural world!

Black Sand Basin packs a punch despite its relatively small size. The diverse hot springs, frequent geyser eruptions, and easy accessibility make it a must-visit for anyone exploring Yellowstone National Park. This hidden gem offers a delightful and...

We found parking easily for our 11’ pull behind at the trailhead. Tucked just west of Old Faithful, Black Sand Basin might sound dark and brooding - but it’s actually one of the most colorful spots in the park. The name comes from the black obsidian sand scattered throughout the area (volcanic glass = geologist gold), but what really stole the show were the blazing microbial mats and vibrant hot springs. We visited in September 2023, and the cooler air made the steam feel extra dramatic - like we were walking through a geothermal ghost town. Cliff Geyser was happily sputtering next to Iron Creek like a little cauldron with a schedule problem, and Rainbow Pool was living up to its name with wild, vivid rings of color, thanks to heat-loving thermophiles doing their beautiful, nerdy thing. It’s a short boardwalk loop, but every step is packed with science, color, and weird Yellowstone magic. Highly recommend if you're into hot water, strange bacteria, and walking on the surface of an alien planet (without...

Located in the Upper Geyser Basin. It is named for the sand derived from black volcanic glass. Located here is Emerald Pool, Rainbow Pool, Sunset Lake and Cliff Geyser. I got there just in time to see Cliff Geyser erupt. Not as crowded as some of the other areas but just as beautiful. Due to damage done to roads and road closures in northern Yellowstone, the southern section of Yellowstone is open with limitations by odd and even last digit tag numbers. Be sure to check the web site as they will turn you around
