Fort Yellowstone probably doesn't look like you would expect. It's just a few old buildings, most of which are marked "private residence". The only building that is open only contains a small exhibit and a nice little gift shop. Also, if you go to Mammoth Hot Spring during the crowded summer season, be aware that there are no bathrooms at the fort (the most common question we heard asked of the Park Rangers there).

The north side of park is where most of the rangers live and study. Additionaly this has some of the original structures still there from when Yellowstone was turned into a national park. The "town" area is right next to mammoth hot springs so you can check out a lot in a small area. Make sure to check out the visitor center for their display of the local wild life.

Fort Yellowstone is largely forgotten but the buildings are in great shape and have been converted to use by the National Park service. Not much to see, but as you walk around the town of Mammoth, be sure to recognize that you are walking through an old fort area! The National Park visitor center is located in one of the old fort buildings.

Yellowstone in winter... better bundle up, twice over! Loved the Visitor's Center at Mammoth Hot Springs and learning about the history of the park. Was blown away seeing what a fully grown elk looked like and really enjoyed the before and after photos of Yellowstone in the lower level. Thank you to the friendly park staff who gave us some great tips on how best to use the wintery conditions and time left in the...

Fort Yellowstone is in the Mammoth Hot Springs Historic District where 35 structures remain from the 1890s and early 1900s represent the first development of administrative and concession facilities in the park. It is situated on an old hot springs formation.

You can take a rest here while visiting the park. There are souvenir shops, museums, chapel and restaurant. You can see elks are grazing...
