Fort Yellowstone is in the Mammoth Hot Springs Historic District where 35 structures remain from the 1890s and early 1900s represent the first development of administrative and concession facilities in the park. It is situated on an old hot springs formation. Fort Yellowstone was truly a community as well as a military outpost.
The mammoth chapel was established in 1913 for celebrating relegious services for the joys of births, christenings, and marriages mingled with the sorrows of illnesses, accidents and deaths. In the decades since, the chapel has continued to serve the community and parishioners. In June 2013, the chapel celebrated its 100th anniversary.
