The Sunday of Labor Day weekend, we entered via West Yellowstone, then went down to Old Faithful, up to Grand Prismatic, and then took the hour's drive up to Mammoth on our way to Canyon Campground. You'll want to do the drive rather than walk it as there's not much else to see after you've done the Upper Terraces loop and also the road is narrow. The Terraces themselves are nice, but if you're short on time, I would recommend against this. It's a bit out of the way from the other major attractions.
