3 stars may be a little harsh, but I only give it 3 stars because this small pool pales in comparison to the hot spring mere yards away. The thing Opal has going for it is the dramatic background of undisturbed landscape and it’s small scale vibrant colors. You are going to walk past this one, take in it’s beauty and respect it for what it is. In regards of how to walk the boardwalks here, I recommend walking in a counterclockwise manner, because this will warm you for the gem of the area the Grand Prismatic Spring, rather than seeing that first and then walking past the Opal and Turquoise pools, which will then seem like insignificant puddles. Look closely at the water spillway from Grand Prismatic, which you will see as you pass the Opal Pool you can see animal footprints of bison and the stalking wolves!

While visiting the 0.7 mile Midway Geyser Basin Trail, you can see the Opal Pool. It is the smallest of the four major features of the Midway Geyser Basin. It is nearly a dormant geyser, but it erupts only a few times a year. Its temperature is 132°F (56°C). The captivating blue water, resembling a precious opal, is the reason to name it like this. Don't miss this unique sight!

Opal Pool is a beautiful, lesser-known gem in Yellowstone’s Midway Geyser Basin. The striking blue color of the pool is captivating, and it’s a great spot to enjoy away from the larger crowds at Grand Prismatic Spring. The boardwalk around the basin offers easy access and nice views of other geothermal features, too. Definitely worth a quick stop while exploring the area!
