The Mount Wood Overlook was already on my plans, during our road trip through West Virginia, and I did not regret a single minute here! The place was not busy at all, maybe 2 to 3 other people at a time when I visited on a late morning. There was plenty of space, and time for taking photos. The entire structure itself is covered from top to bottom in graffiti, making it a very expressive and inspiring landmark. There are no restrooms, but there are available and free parking on site. On top of it all, is the amazing view of Wheeling city, that sits right in the border of Ohio and WV. Hence the word “overlook” in its title!
The best part for seeing places like these, as how the arts and designs are ever changing. Many artists come and go painting this place. It may not look the same if I re-visit a few years later. This makes Mount Wood overlook even more worth stopping by to sight see, whenever I am driving by to WV again. I highly suggest visiting Mount Wood Overlook for any photographer, art enthusiasts and any other travelers who are passing through...
Read moreMy favorite view of Wheeling, West Virginia. The hill castle has a great story as well. A local doctor had started having the castle built for his wife and two daughters in the mid 1920's. The castle was going to serve as a home/clinic to serve his community. He was known for his acts of kindness and often made payment plans for his less fortunate patients. The long & short of it is that two "patients" convinced the good doctor that they could not afford their prescribed medications. Being an understanding soul, he decided to give them the prescription "under the table" at a price they COULD afford. Well the two patients were actually Federal Narcotics Officers and the doctor was sentenced to 18 months in prison. He never moved back to Wheeling after his release from...
Read moreThe overlook has been a part of my landmarks for wheeling ever since I can remember and although the spectacular views have only changed slightly over the years by additions and subtractions the overlook area itself has had a long awaited much deserved uplift and recognition and is now actually a city park and is maintained like I've always hoped it would be, I'm sure the majority of my generation and others appreciate it just as well. I know many of us have some good memories and hard wired definitions of home because of the overlook and I'm glad to see that it will and can remain as such and be a staple of wheeling and a place that can remind us what's and even sometimes who's important and how to put it all in...
