With the rave reviews we were lured into placing an order here. We placed an order to go. I grew up in Asia for 18 years and have had “real” peking duck from multiple restaurants/street venders/night markets. I ordered from here after explaining I’d grow up in Asia and was looking for Peking duck prepared in the traditional way. The traditional way is to dunk the raw duck into boiling water then hang it to dry for 24 hours. It is simply left to hang for 24 hours with a glaze/marinade rubbed inside and out. After that it is slow roasted in an oven while basting it for about four hours or longer. There are several variations to this but it is a long process and the ducks they choose are specially fed and only 65 days old when butchered. What I received tasted like a duck bought from Walmart with no flavor, and baked in an oven for an hour. It was flavorless, fatty, semi tough and definitely NOT prepared in the traditional sense. Now if you’re not expecting a traditional Peking duck then it’s OK. Or if you’ve never had a real Peking duck. Only the American versions. The pancakes that came with it were dry and brittle. We could barely wrap our duck and a pancake without it cracking and breaking. The second dish we ordered with House Special seafood delight. Once again we are disappointed it was in a heavy brown garlicky sauce which masked the nice fresh flavors of the vegetables and seafood. I honestly think the crab meat was fake, and the scallops could have been to. The shrimp were actual shrimp but had absolutely no flavor due to the sauce it was all doused in over cooked in. I think this dish is prepared in mass production and then stored in a giant container in the fridge. It’s then simply just reheated either to put on their buffet or to serve when ordered. Rice came as a side and I specifically asked if it was a short grain sticky rice and was assured it was. What we received was a long grain traditional American rice. The BEST duck we had while in Wheeling, was actually from Vegabond restaurant we ordered the duck wings just to try. If you order them GET THE SAUCE on the side and you will get a true...
Read moreNot Golden anymore. I have been eating at Golden Chopsticks ever since Martin opened this place. I worked with Martin when Peking Gardens was in Wheeling. Jimmy too bless his soul. However, the quality is not what it once was since Martin sold this place and the customer service I received while ordering takeout was terrible. I miss Jimmy. He was the best!. I was told that they don’t make sweet and sour pork. Only chicken, beef, or shrimp. and the ginger salad is no more. This was one of my faves! As I was inquiring about Singapore chow mei fun the girl told me to”hold on.” After waiting for a few and being a little frustrated I hung up and called back hoping to get someone else. Another person answered and I asked him what was in the Singapore chow Mei fun. He told me veggies, egg and a protein of my choice like chicken, beef, or shrimp. I am familiar with this dish and know what goes in it. I just wanted to make sure they made it this way. So I ordered this dish with the chicken as well as the sweet and sour chicken. When I got home and opened the containers I was very disappointed at what I saw. The sweet and sour chicken is what you would get a a cheap fast food Chinese takeout. Heavy breading with very little meat and hardly any veggies. Chow mei fun did not have one sliver of chicken or veggies or egg. So sad to this place turn out the way it has. Lots of good memories though. Thanks Martin and Jimmy for...
Read moreI chose this place because a friend said they had white meat chicken. I get there and the menu DOES NOT tell you what's in the dish or what comes with the dish (rice, soup, etc). So...I asked. The waitress didn't know what came in the dish, just gave me her best educated GUESS. Like what??? It's not listed on the menu so the wait staff better know....nope!!! Well, I ordered chicken and it was dark meat. When I asked about it I was told that only SOME dishes were white meat. I slid my plate over and told her I couldn't eat it...I don't eat anything but white chicken. She proceeds to ask if I want a box for it so I can take it home to give to someone else I live with to eat. Like what???? You're not going to ask me if I want to oder something else? You're not going to tell me what dishes ARE white meat??? And you assume who I live with?? Listen....train your staff AND spend the extra money to list what you're selling. I seriously wanted to like this place because I heard good things. But NOPE....you SUCK!!! I'd reach out to the owner but the other reviews say what a verbally abusive jerk he is so...I have no desire.
P.S. how does a "chinese" place NOT have...
