Not well kept as when they 1st opened up but still a decent, nearby place to see a little bit of nature. A lot of the previously existing trails are no more as the grass are overgrown. They used to have this nice extended walk where you could see geese laying eggs in what felt like the middle of nowhere. Many trails and loops are gone.
Take your time and walk quietly and you might encounter some animals you may or may not expect like snake, groundhog, plenty of barn swallows, frogs, turtles, and of course bugs.
Side note:
Because this is right in the middle of the city area, be aware of your surroundings and bring protection with you. I've been here a couple of times and although I haven't had any problems, I get a weird danger sense that I don't get at other hiking areas.
Also people come here with their dogs unleashed. Some will run towards you, and you hope they're not going to bite. Owners need to leash their pets. Some people have had bad incidents with dogs, and you don't let your dog jump on strangers or...
Read moreA small beautiful restoration and habitat preservation park/project here in Avenel, NJ because of Ernest L. Oros and the many organizations that care to restore some part of the wild life that used to thrive here. This isn't a big place, that is true, but that's okay, if you live close, and like nature, check it out; the secluded area also makes this a nice spot for quiet walks. It is a little gem in the middle of an otherwise poorly kept part of Avenel. It is also an on going project, so more flowers have been planted since the pictures above. A nice place to visit on a sunny day in Summer or Spring to observe all kinds of animals and flowers. Please throw your trash out there are recycling bins in the front. (I seen people...
Read moreThis park and refuge is quite the gem to find in Woodbridge, and a great example of community led action to restore and preserve waterways and space for wildlife. Between the sounds of industry, trains, and traffic there are sounds and sights of nature. Seems maintenance is largely by volunteers, so encourage all visitors to pack in/pack out and pick up. I appreciate the trails have a natural feel, nothing paved, but many are wide enough to accommodate a sturdy wheelchair even for a short distance. Gazebo and small bike rack available, several benches. Watch for thorns on trail edges, and...
