⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Fascinating Glimpse into Zapotec History The Mitla Archaeological Zone is an absolute must-visit for history lovers and anyone wanting to experience the rich cultural heritage of Oaxaca. Unlike other sites, Mitla is unique because of its incredibly well-preserved geometric stone mosaics, which are some of the most intricate and detailed in all of Mesoamerica. Walking through the site, you can explore impressive tombs, ancient courtyards, and beautifully designed walls, all showcasing the architectural brilliance of the Zapotec civilization. The precision of the stonework—without mortar—is mind-blowing and speaks to the advanced engineering skills of the time. The surrounding town adds to the charm, with traditional markets, mezcal tastings, and local artisans selling handcrafted textiles and pottery. It’s less crowded than Monte Albán, making it a more intimate and immersive experience. If you're in Oaxaca, Mitla is a must-see for its stunning artistry, deep historical significance, and breathtaking mountain backdrop. Highly recommend! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Absolutely stunning and well-preserved details and carved reliefs on these pyramid structures. A Spanish cathedral was built on top of one of the ancient structures, so it makes it difficult to tell exactly what was in that particular spot. All I know is that its ancient foundation was still intact. There are several pyramids, courtyards, water reservoirs, and drainage canals present on site. Some of the stone foundations left behind indicate that these ancient people lived in either partially wooden buildings or adobe or a combination thereof. According to the tour guides, this site was home to a city of 25,000. Archeologists have done an incredible job restoring, preserving, and extrapolating data from what they could gather. The Spanish were more than colonialists. They were conquerors of whole societies that existed for thousands of years, all in the name of Christ. Something tells me Jesus would have frowned upon cultural genocide.

If you have plenty of time to visit while you’re in Oaxaca, I recommended visiting. Specially if you’re here during Dia de Muertos due to its significance to the Zapotec people and to its being a place for the death to rest. The site is well kept, and the temples are beautifully preserved. Wish we got a guide so we could understand more what were looking at, but we were short on time. If you’re visiting past November and are short on time, and are debating between other touristic sites, you can definitely skip this one, just make sure you go to Monte Alban. the ticket cost per person was $90 pesos, which for the size of the site, we found to be a bit high considering Monte Alban is the same price and the size of it it’s not even comparable. we waited for 20 minutes to get in, as they do segmented entrances to avoid the area becoming overcrowded.

Very interesting ruins, but once again INAH has made the experience much less enjoyable. They have closed all tombs, yet kept the entrance price the same (75 pesos). The opening hours have been cut to only 4 hours per day, 5 days per week. During Christmas time a huge line starts forming at 9.30am until closing time. I arrived at 10am and had to wait about 30 minutes to get it. They let in 70 ppl at a time, every 15 minutes or so. There is no posted information detailing this system anywhere. The place is packed and they are making tons of money so they could easily set up a system to allow ppl to see the tombs. It's like INAH is trying to make the system as confusing and illogical as possible. That being said, it's an important and beautiful site that's a must visit if you have the patience.

This place is absolutely one of the best Arquelogical areas of Oaxaca, as it holds such a strong connection with the spirit world, and such incredible spiritual energy, you can just feel how fantastic this place is really is, snd to hear the origins and why is so special makes it even better. Our ancestors had secrets hidden within its ruins places that haven't been explore because of how hard is to get there as they believed that there is a door to the underworld, and sacrifices needed to be done to satisfy the gods, these and more stories are told and only a few know about this. Highly recommend to visit this place with a full trip but always have a guide as it's very important to know the history and mistory of Mitla "Valley of the dead".
