The Salty Shack – Lancelin

Arrived after 9pm, ready to flop on the couch with a cuppa… only to find no milk. Apparently, $185 a night doesn’t include a $3 bottle from IGA. The sofa was there, but it looked like it had survived a few beach parties — stains included.

Parking was like a treasure hunt in the dark, except the treasure was a narrow strip on the side of the drive because the backyard is fenced off. Bring a torch, a sense of humour, and maybe a tape measure if you’ve got more than one car.

Inside, the place was clean. Outside, not so much. Think weeds, tired plastic chairs, and a yard that’s given up on its dreams. The photos online must’ve been taken on its wedding day, because we did not see that version.

It’s a shame, because with a little love this place could be fantastic. A tidy yard, a couple of fresh outdoor chairs, a working light or two for late arrivals, and a small welcome basket with basics would make a huge difference. Even a few potted plants could lift the whole feel.

Good location if you’re here for the beach, but for the price, I’d expect a warmer welcome, less shabby surrounds, and a couch that doesn’t tell a story in stains. As it stands, the “Salty” in the name isn’t just about...

We booked this accommodation at the last minute, when there were only three options left online. The photos looked fine, but the reality was disappointing and completely different from the pictures. Since it was a last-minute choice, we didn’t have high expectations, but cleanliness is the very least one can expect. Unfortunately, it was far from clean — we didn’t even sit on the sofa, and we had to use our own bedding from the car instead of the ones provided.
